New Soup Dumpling Spot in Austin
Following its success in California, Special Noodles has now ventured into Austin, Texas. Known for their in-house crafted dumplings, it is a great addition to the Austin food scene. I highly suggest ordering their soup dumplings and pan-fried pork buns (sheng jian bao). Although the snowflake dumplings were pretty good, I would rather have the soup dumplings or the sheng jian bao. If you are a soup person, I suggest trying the stone pot broths!

As an Austin food enthusiast, I’m always on the hunt for those hidden gems, and let me tell you, Special Noodles is precisely that kind of discovery! When I first heard they were bringing their California success to Austin, my expectations were high, especially for their famous soup dumplings (xiao long bao) and pan-fried pork buns (sheng jian bao). And after my visit, I can confidently say, they did not disappoint. Let’s talk about those soup dumplings first, because they are truly a revelation. The moment they arrived, steaming hot, I could tell by the delicate sheen of the wrappers that these were special. The OCR mentioned the skin was “thin and didn't tear,” and it’s absolutely true! There’s nothing worse than a soup dumpling breaking before you can get that first savory burst of broth. Here, they held up beautifully, allowing me to savor every drop of that “light and sweet” broth, perfectly complementing the succulent pork filling. Each bite was an explosion of flavor and warmth – definitely a contender for the best pork soup dumplings in Austin, TX. But don't stop at the soup dumplings! The pan-fried pork buns are an absolute must-order. The OCR described them as a “fried version of the soup dumpling,” and it’s a brilliant comparison. Imagine all the juicy goodness of a soup dumpling, but with an incredible textural contrast. The “bottom is crispy,” providing a delightful crunch that gives way to a soft, fluffy bun and a gloriously “juicy inside.” They’re hearty, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying, a perfect companion to the more delicate soup dumplings. I’m so glad Austin finally has a spot that sells them with such perfection! Beyond these two stars, Special Noodles offers a fantastic array of other dishes. We also tried the snowflake dumplings, which were “tasty” and had a wonderfully “crispy skirt batter.” For those who appreciate a heartier, warming experience, their stone pot broths are fantastic. We had a beef noodle soup, which was unique because it was “heated by the bottom of the pot throughout dinner,” keeping it perfectly warm and flavorful to the last spoonful. The menu also features other delights like beef rolls and scallion pancakes, both of which were incredibly “flaky” and delicious. One of the most impressive aspects of Special Noodles, which the OCR highlighted, is seeing “multiple people meticulously making the dumplings from scratch.” This commitment to fresh, handmade quality truly shines through in every dish. It's not just a meal; it's an experience that celebrates traditional craftsmanship. You can taste the care and authenticity in every bite, from the delicate folds of the soup dumplings to the robust flavors of their Mala Dry Pot – which, by the way, with its “stir-fried noodles, beef, spam, tofu skin, wood ear mushroom,” was “super heavy but incredibly flavorful” and left us completely satisfied. Located at 13729 Research Blvd #695, Austin, TX 78750, Special Noodles is a fantastic addition to the Austin food scene. Whether you're a long-time fan of soup dumplings or looking to try them for the first time, this spot offers an authentic and incredibly delicious culinary journey. I can't recommend it enough for anyone in Austin craving top-notch dumplings and flavorful Chinese cuisine!
