History They Don't Tell You About

... Read moreThe Deacons for Defense and Justice represent a unique chapter in the civil rights movement that is often overlooked. Unlike the nonviolent protests championed by figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., the Deacons believed in armed self-defense to protect Black communities from violent groups like the Ku Klux Klan. Established on July 10, 1964, in Jonesboro, Louisiana by Earnest "Chilly Willy" Thomas and Frederick Douglas Kirkpatrick, the Deacons emerged during a time of intense racial terror and intimidation. Throughout the Deep South, the Deacons provided vital security for Black leaders and voters, often escorting individuals to registration drives and protests with guns at the ready. Their presence alone was a deterrent to violent attacks, allowing other civil rights organizations such as CORE and the NAACP to organize more confidently. They worked closely with the broader movement while respecting the nonviolent philosophy, creating a complementary strategy to achieve racial justice. In Bogalusa, Louisiana, under the leadership of Charles Sims, the Deacons famously confronted the Klan during voter registration drives in 1965, forcing the white supremacist group to retreat. Similarly, in Natchez, Mississippi, they supported political campaigns aimed at ending segregation, sending a clear message that violence against activists would be met with defense. Their ability to guard marches and protect leaders like James Farmer of CORE earned respect and helped sustain momentum during the most dangerous periods of the civil rights era. While the Voting Rights Act of 1968 and the rise of groups like the Black Panther Party eventually led to the decline of the Deacons, their impact on the movement remains profound. They exemplified how armed resistance could coexist with nonviolence to safeguard human rights and lives. Recognizing the Deacons for Defense and Justice helps paint a more complete picture of the strategies and sacrifices that shaped the fight for equality in America.
