Anime sketch

Drawing anime characters has always been a passion of mine, and lately, I've really been focusing on the details that bring a character to life, especially in close-up shots. There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing a character's personality shine through their expressions, and for me, that often starts with their eyes and smile. When I'm working on a manga drawing style, I pay extra attention to the eyes. They’re truly the windows to the soul, even in a sketch! I love experimenting with how to draw large eyes that convey emotion without being overwhelming. It's not just about the size, but the subtle details in the pupils, the reflections, and the shape of the eyelids that make them expressive. Sometimes, just a slight tweak can change a look from curious to determined, or from shy to playful. For this recent anime-style sketch, I really concentrated on getting those specific details right to ensure the character's large eyes told a story. Then there's the gentle smile. This can be surprisingly tricky to get right! It's not a wide grin, but a subtle upturn of the lips that suggests warmth and kindness. I find that focusing on the slight curve of the mouth and the natural creases around the eyes (often called 'smize' – smiling with your eyes!) helps to create a truly genuine gentle smile. It's a delicate balance, and I often spend a lot of time refining these lines to make sure it looks natural and inviting. The black and white drawing style I used really highlights how much impact detailed line work can have in conveying these subtle expressions. Capturing the face and upper body in a close-up anime-style sketch allows for so much artistic freedom. You can really dive into the nuances of short, spiky hair textures or the folds of a collared shirt. Every line contributes to the overall feel. I particularly enjoy the process of laying down initial lines and then carefully building up the detailed line work, adding depth and shadow. It’s like sculpting with a pencil! And sometimes, you just have to add a personal touch! In one of my recent sketches, centered on a notebook page, I included some fun DND-themed doodles. Things like a 'D.N.D.' text, an eye icon, a potion icon, and a bow and arrow – they add a bit of whimsy and show off another side of the character's world, even if it's just a full anime-style sketch of a character with short hair and a smile. It's a great way to make each piece unique and tell a little more about the character without needing words.
