I had a brain injury back in 2019

So when I read or speak It comes out all mixed up sometimes and It makes me stutter or just start over my sentence. And when people speak sometimes it just sounds like gibberish. It’s not easy to live with. (Also this is my favorite Haerin fancam:) #haerin #newjeans #foryou #kpop #kpopfyp

... Read moreAfter experiencing a brain injury in 2019, I learned firsthand what it means to live with aphasia, a language disorder affecting my ability to speak, understand, read, and write. Though my thoughts remain clear, expressing them becomes a daily challenge. For example, when I try to read out loud or speak, my words sometimes come out jumbled or I find myself stuttering and having to restart sentences. It can be frustrating, especially when others don’t understand and communication breaks down. Understanding aphasia helped me cope with these difficulties. I learned it is caused by damage to brain areas responsible for language—often due to stroke or injury like mine. Importantly, aphasia affects language ability but not intelligence. This knowledge eased my feelings of isolation and helped me explain my condition to friends and family. Over time, I’ve found practical strategies to improve communication. Writing things down before speaking or using simple phrases helps reduce stuttering. Listening carefully and asking for clarification when others speak to me makes conversations less overwhelming. I’ve also explored speech therapy, which has been beneficial in slowly rebuilding my language skills. Engaging with communities or groups affected by aphasia provides immense emotional support. Sharing experiences with others facing similar challenges is empowering and motivates me to keep improving. Plus, small joys like watching my favorite Haerin fancam or listening to K-pop bring comfort and distraction from the difficulties aphasia brings. Living with aphasia is undeniably tough, but with patience, support, and understanding, it is possible to adapt and regain meaningful connections through communication. If you or someone you know experiences similar symptoms after brain injury, seeking professional advice is essential to maximize recovery and quality of life.
