I wish I knew this before buying travel insurance

I usually buy Singlife travel insurance almost immediately after booking my air tickets, mainly to qualify for the Cancel for Any Reason clause.

So when my airline cancelled my flight, I thought: “No problem, I’ll just rebook another flight and update my insurance.” But that's when I realised that Singlife doesn’t allow date changes at all! And as far as I can tell, it is the only insurer with this restriction. Why?!

Also, insurers generally don’t cover cancellations if the responsibility falls on the airline, like schedule changes. That makes sense… but here’s the tricky part:

If you’ve already flown out and your return flight is cancelled, and you can’t wait for the next flight that the airline arranges and proceeded to book your own alternative ticket, just know that your insurance may not cover the cost of that new ticket.

Share this with your friends and family so that they are aware of this too!

... Read moreFrom my experience with Singlife and observations from other insurers, here are some tips that might save you money and hassle: Firstly, not all travel insurers allow changing travel dates after purchase. Singlife requires cancelling and repurchasing policies if your trip dates shift, unlike some competitors who permit extensions or date changes under certain conditions. If your plans are flexible, this is a key point to check before buying. Secondly, when airlines cancel flights, insurers typically don’t cover costs if you buy your own replacement ticket instead of waiting for their rebooking. This is common among providers like FWD, Income, Sompo, and Singlife. Before purchasing a new ticket independently, verify if your policy covers it to avoid denied claims. Thirdly, if you’ve just booked insurance to cover unforeseen cancellations or trip interruptions, understand the administrative fees involved if you cancel your policy before the trip. Singlife waives fees only if you purchase a replacement policy; otherwise, fees can be deducted from any refund. Lastly, always review pre-existing condition clauses and COVID-19 coverage specifics, as these can vary significantly and affect your claim outcomes. By understanding these nuances early, you can better select travel insurance that fits your travel style and reduces surprises during disruptions. I learned these lessons the hard way and hope sharing them helps others travel smarter and with peace of mind.
