What does a typical homeschool schedule look like?

#lemon8diarychallenge

A lot of parents feel pressure to make their homeschool look like public school. But the best part about educating your children at home is that your homeschool can work however you need it to.

Which means that you do NOT need to find a way to "do school" for 6 hours every single day. Homeschooling allows you to design a schedule that works for your unique family dynamic.

In my family we desperately need structure and thrive off of a consistent but simple routine.

However, instead of scheduling our day, hour by hour, we each follow a list of tasks that we have complete.

Every day is slightly different in terms of what time we wake up, eat and when we finish our tasks for the day. The only rules are that we do not have any screen time (with the exception of what might be needed for school) or free time until our tasks are complete.

Even though we don't follow a strict timed schedule, I went ahead and put together an example of how our days might go to illustrate what a homeschool schedule could look like.

Wake Up-9:00

Get dressed & ready-9:15

Eat breakfast-9:30

10:00-Work on core subjects

-language arts

-math

11:00-Art Study/Art Project & Audio Book

11:30-Enrichment

-Science, Geography, History & Latin

12:30-lunch

1:00-finish any remaining work OR free time if all subjects are completed.

And that's it!

That's our whole day where school is done in roughly 2.5 hours for my younger kids.

For my oldest child her schedule is slightly different in that she probably needs a full hour for each subject area (math, language arts and enrichment).

So her school work may take a full 3 hours to complete her assignments.

Of course your schedule doesn't have to look anything like this. This is just what works for us.

Doing school in the morning helps our day go a lot more smoothly and keeps us from getting behind.

It keeps us focused on learning as our top priority and after we have taken care of our responsibilities, we can spend the rest of the day focusing on passion projects, finding activities around town, visiting with family, or just hanging out and enjoying each other.

If anyone else has figured out their schedule for the upcoming school year, share it in the comments. I would love to see what works for your family! ❤️

... Read moreA typical homeschool schedule doesn’t have to mirror public schooling. Many families thrive on a routine that suits their lifestyle, focusing on core subjects while allowing flexibility. Key elements to consider while designing your schedule include: 1. **Adaptability:** Understand that your homeschool schedule can change based on your family’s needs. Instead of strict timings, consider task lists that encourage accountability and completion at each member's pace. 2. **Core Subjects Focus:** Allocate time for essential subjects like math and language arts but ensure variety with enrichment activities (science, history, art). This keeps learning engaging and scales with your child’s growing needs. 3. **Time Management:** While the example given showcases a timeline, every family can adapt durations to fit their children's attention spans. Younger kids may need less time, while older students could require longer periods for deeper understanding. 4. **Structured Freedom:** Encourage a screen-free environment until tasks are complete to bolster focus. Once educational goals are met, families can enjoy leisure activities or passion projects, allowing for creative and social growth. 5. **Family Engagement:** Communicate with fellow homeschoolers for ideas and experiences to inspire your schedule. Observing what works for others can spark new ideas and methods. Tailoring a homeschool schedule can lead to not just effective learning but also invaluable family bonding time, transforming education into a shared journey of discovery.

As a homeschooling mama (preschool right now) I love this so much! We have a very similar routine waking at 9am, getting dressed, breakfast & we do reading, calender time & workbook time. Later in the day we do art or coloring of some kind & free play the rest of the day 💗
