Schools Should Have Uniform Policies

Unpopular Opinion: Schools should have uniform policies.

Over the last 8 years since our oldest child started Pre-K we have gone to several different types of schools(public, private, hybrid, homeschool, charter and micro). As a result, we've experienced a variety of different dress code/uniform policies and I've come to believe that uniforms should be standard in all US schools. Here is 8 reasons why:

1. Makes mornings easier & decreases tardies-when you know exactly what you have to wear in the morning then getting dressed is a lot easier and faster. It makes getting out of the house on time more manageable when you have big decisions like what to wear, taken care of for you.

2. Puts the focus on academics instead of fashion-don't get me wrong, it's normal for kids to want to show their own style, but for students that are more focused on their fashion choices and what people think, they lose the important learning opportunities that prioritizing academics and extra curriculars offers. And no matter what you are required to wear, you can always find ways to show your creativity and individuality by how you style your hair, what accessories and jewelry you pick and what shoes you wear.

3. Makes the financial differences between students less obvious-when everyone wears the same thing it's a lot less obvious who can afford expensive brands and who is shopping at Walmart.

4. Less Expensive-uniforms limit out the need to keep up with popular brands that may be more expensive. It also allows students to maintain a smaller school wardrobe with as little as 2-3 shirts and 2-3 bottoms.

Washing and re-wearing uniforms is substantially cheaper then purchasing 2-3 weeks worth of clothing so your child isn't obviously wearing the same clothing every week or even every few days.

5. Decreases self confidence issues-When everyone is wearing the same thing you don't have to worry about how you look and if everyone is staring at your or judging you. For better or for worse, You know that everyone is dressed the same, which frees you up to focus on what's important, academics.

6. Academics are taken more seriously-the way you dress effects your mindset. When you dress up for school, you are more likely to focus and take things seriously. When you roll out of bed and walk into school wearing PJ bottoms or sweat pants that you slept in, you are more likely to have a lazy attitude and take things less seriously. The task of learning is serious, and we should treat it as such by dressing in a formal manner.

7. Improves social interaction- wearing uniforms Allows people to judge others based on their personality and shared interests instead of how they dress. It helps people connect that otherwise may not and as a result, teaching children to look past judging people on their outward appearance and based on their personality and what they have in common.

8. Prepares students for entering the workforce-many kids leave highschool without a clue how to dress appropriately for job interviews or to meet business casual dress expectations.

School is all about preparing students for entering the workforce. So why do we allow them to wear jeans with holes, underwear sticking out, baggy sweatpants and flip flops, or crop tops?

None of that is acceptable work attire, so it shouldn't be school attire. A business casual uniform policy should be a standard part of learning as it prepares students for how to dress when they go out into the world and join the workforce.

Now tell me What you think? Should schools have uniform policies?

... Read moreI know what some of you might be thinking: 'But what about individuality?' 'Aren't uniforms expensive?' These are valid concerns I've heard from other parents, and honestly, I had some of them myself before truly experiencing the benefits. Let's tackle individuality first. While uniforms like a classic plaid school uniform dress or a simple white collared shirt with a navy blue V-neck vest might seem restrictive, my kids have found so many creative ways to express themselves. It's not about what you wear, but how you wear it! Think unique hairstyles, fun socks (if allowed, within reason), cool backpacks, or even a subtly patterned headband. One of my daughters loves pairing her yellow polo shirt and navy skirt with fun patterned leggings on colder days—it adds a touch of her personality without breaking the dress code. It teaches them to be creative within boundaries, a skill that's incredibly valuable later in life. Instead of competing over designer brands, they learn to highlight their personality through their actions, kindness, and talents. Then there's the cost. Many assume uniforms are an added expense, but in my experience, it's often the opposite. We save so much by not constantly buying new 'trendy' outfits to keep up with fashion fads. A few durable sets of dark uniform dresses or light blue pants and shirts can last the whole school year. Plus, many schools offer uniform exchange programs or sales, making them even more affordable. It's much cheaper to have 2-3 white shirts and bottoms that you wash regularly than a closet full of expensive, quickly outgrown casual clothes. And what about comfort? I've seen kids in everything from stiff, formal uniforms to more relaxed options like polo shirts and khakis. The key is finding uniforms made from comfortable, breathable fabrics. Many schools are now opting for more modern, comfortable designs that still look sharp. Whether it’s a soft cotton navy cardigan over a shirt or well-fitting red plaid skirts, comfort is definitely achievable. Beyond these practicalities, uniforms really do prepare students for the real world. Think about it: most jobs require a dress code, whether it's business casual or a specific uniform. Learning to dress appropriately for an environment, even if it’s just a white collared shirt and tie, is a foundational skill for entering the workforce. It teaches respect for the institution and the task at hand. My personal journey through various schools, from public to charter, has solidified my belief. The visual consistency provided by uniforms helps create a sense of unity and purpose, shifting the focus from superficial comparisons back to academics and character. It's not just about what they wear; it's about what it signifies for their learning journey and future success.

Disagree. When kids are limited to uniforms, a lot of them will only get two sets of clothes, and if you don’t have a working washer/dryer or have an irresponsible parent you have kids forced to show up in dirty clothes.

As a child who wore a uniform pre-k to sixth grade I disagree. My school was very strict about dress code meaning you could not express yourself in any way at all. Now yes I agree there are certain things that shouldn’t be allowed because they could very well be distracting but my school was so strict you weren’t even allowed to wear a single bracelet or even a scrunchie on your wrist to tie your hair up for later. And yes there are absolutely pros to a uniform but I would hate and did hate (personally) having to wear a uniform five days of the week for about six/seven hours every day. Kids need a way to express themselves be it hairstyles or jewelry or even just the style of clothes they wear.
