be the neighbor everybody likes! 👫🏻

i used to living in an apartment complex where i was on the first floor and my upstairs neighbors would be SO loud all the time 😭

they would be playing music loudly or moving things around late at night, their dog would bark all day or they would stomp on the floor 🤦🏻‍♀️ it would happen on a daily basis too! it was very frustrating (especially because i was a student at the time too!)

at my new building i’m at now, i make sure to practice being a considerate and respectful neighbor (and all my neighbors do the same! they’re great!)

from respecting the quiet hours in our building, making sure to take care of our trash room on our floor, and also being respectful of how many guests i have over or the noise level from my apartment! o always try to show the respect i expect to receive! 😊

have you had any bad neighbor experiences? 🤔

... Read moreAfter experiencing my share of frustrating apartment living situations, I've really learned that creating a peaceful home isn't just about what happens inside your four walls, but also how you interact with the community right outside your door – especially in the hallways! It’s all about showing respect and making shared spaces pleasant for everyone. Making Hallways Welcoming, Not Cluttered One thing I've noticed in many apartment buildings is how hallways can become extensions of people's homes. While that decorative wreath on your door adds a nice touch, I've found it’s best to keep the actual hallway clear. I make sure my shoes aren't piled outside my door, and I never leave trash bags out for long – definitely not overnight! It keeps the hallway clean, accessible for everyone, and simply looks better. Think about it: a clear hallway is a happy hallway, and it shows you're considerate of others who live there. Navigating Noise in Shared Spaces My old apartment was a symphony of stomping and barking, so now I'm super mindful of sound, especially in the hallways and when using shared amenities. If I'm chatting with a friend while waiting for the elevator, I try to keep my voice low. I also make sure my dog (if I had one, or if I'm visiting someone with one!) isn't barking excessively, especially when passing other apartments. Those quiet hours? They're not just for inside your apartment; they apply to hallway noise too! A simple awareness of how sound travels can make a huge difference in neighborly harmony. For pet owners, I’ve seen great neighbors who always ensure their pets are quiet and messes are cleaned up immediately, both inside and outside the building. Beyond Your Door: Being a Shared Space Superstar Apartment living often means sharing more than just walls – think laundry rooms, gyms, or even common lounges. I always try to leave these spaces better than I found them. In the laundry room, that means cleaning out the lint trap, wiping down machines if there's a spill, and promptly removing my clothes when cycles are done so others can use them. If there’s a shared gym, I wipe down equipment after use. These small acts of consideration go a long way in building a positive community spirit. It's about respecting the communal areas and ensuring they remain a clean space for all residents. My Approach to Tricky Situations Let's be real, even with the best intentions, neighborly issues can pop up. Instead of letting small annoyances fester, I've learned that a polite, direct approach often works best. If I hear consistent noise at odd hours, for example, I might leave a friendly, anonymous note or, if I know the neighbor, gently bring it up in passing. I focus on the impact, not placing blame. "Hey, I noticed some noise late last night, maybe your TV was a bit loud?" is much better than "You're always so loud!" If issues persist or are more serious, that's when it’s time to involve building management. My goal is always to resolve things respectfully and maintain a peaceful atmosphere for everyone, rather than letting things escalate. It's about finding practical solutions together. Being a good apartment neighbor is truly a two-way street. By being mindful of our shared spaces, managing our noise, and showing consideration, we can all contribute to a much more pleasant and harmonious living experience. It's about building a community where everyone feels comfortable and respected.
