living with city noise: my solutions 🌇

if you live in a city, you know there is constant things happening around us that create noise! whether it’s police cars & ambulance sirens, or music from events downtown, there’s always some level of noise happening 👂🏼

👎 however, city noise, or noise in general can impact our mood or health more than we realize! it can cause:

- sleep disruption

- stress & anxiety caused by noise pollution

- mental health changes

👍 things i do to try to drown out the city noise are:

- closing my bedroom doors when i sleep

- closing my blinds (or curtains) at night to muffle noise

- using home decor as an absorber of sound, things like rugs, tapestry’s, wall hangings, blankets, etc

i’m very lucky that my building is made of concrete and my bedroom is in the inner part of my apartment layout so i’m away from the big windows, so that helps a LOT with the city noise. but finding small, manageable solutions to reduce noise can make such a difference in your day-to-day life! 😌

... Read moreLiving in a bustling city often means contending with constant noise—from emergency sirens to lively downtown events. This urban soundtrack can significantly disrupt sleep and increase stress levels. Beyond the common advice of closing doors and using curtains, there are additional measures you can take to create a quieter, more peaceful living space. One effective trick is to utilize home decor strategically to absorb sound. Rugs, tapestries, wall hangings, and blankets can all help to muffle noise by reducing echoes and vibrations within a room. Adding thick, plush rugs especially helps if you have hard flooring, as they cushion footsteps and diminish sound reflection. Many city dwellers also find white noise machines or nature sound playlists beneficial. These sounds provide consistent background noise that masks irregular and jarring city sounds, such as sirens or construction, making it easier to fall and stay asleep. Apartment layout plays a crucial role as well. Placing your bedroom away from windows facing busy streets and closer to the interior part of your apartment can markedly reduce noise intrusion. Concrete ceilings and walls, while architectural features, also offer significant soundproofing benefits compared to materials like wood or drywall. Ceiling fans can also help by producing constant ambient noise, which, like white noise machines, helps drown out abrupt city sounds. Additionally, sealing any gaps or crevices around windows and doors prevents noise leakage and enhances insulation. If apartment hunting in a noisy city, prioritizing buildings with concrete structures and inner layouts away from street-facing windows can save you from noise hassles later. Implementing these layered noise-reducing strategies can transform your urban living experience, improving sleep quality, lowering stress, and ultimately boosting mental health amidst the dynamic city environment.
