so i live in a city, and that means that noise is surrounding me at all times 😅
whether it’s city noise from outside or apartment building noise from neighbors and other residents.
one of the wonderful things about my apartment though, is that the bedroom is located towards the middle of the unit, which makes it a lot harder for noise to enter this space!
the barn doors also help to create an extra barrier to keep noise completely out! i don’t usually need to shut them, but it does help if i want total silence when im trying to sleep 😴
some other ways i’ve blocked out noise:
- using lots of bedding!! this really helps absorb noise and sounds
- if you don’t have carpet, get yourself a rug! it helps, trust me!
- curtains! similar to carpet and bedding, they help with absorbing sound (and they will look cute 😉)
... Read moreLiving in a bustling city often means dealing with constant noise pollution, whether from traffic, construction, or neighbors in apartment buildings. Soundproofing your space can be crucial for enhancing your comfort and improving sleep quality. One often overlooked approach is bedroom location—the author mentions their bedroom is located in the center of their apartment, which naturally reduces noise intrusion by distancing it from windows and walls facing the street.
In addition to structural factors, using soft materials like bedding, rugs, and curtains plays a vital role because these absorb sound waves, minimizing echo and reducing noise transmission. Carpets or rugs laid down on hard floors can dramatically cut down footstep noise and lower overall sound reflection within a room. Curtains, especially heavy or layered ones, complement this effect and add style to your décor. Another practical tip is sealing gaps at the bottom of doors with a towel or draft stopper to prevent sound leaks through small openings.
Barn doors, as mentioned, offer an extra physical barrier that helps in blocking out noise when closed, acting as an additional layer beyond the regular door frame. For times when silent solitude is essential—such as falling asleep or focused work—combining these physical soundproofing methods with a white noise machine can mask residual external sounds. White noise machines create ambient sounds that help trick the brain into hearing less disruptive background noise, making it easier to relax.
By integrating these strategies, residents in noisy urban apartments can transform their living space into a quieter, more comfortable retreat. Whether you’re sensitive to city sounds or just want a moment of calm, these easy-to-implement, affordable methods provide effective noise reduction without expensive renovations. Remember, small changes like adding soft textures and sealing door gaps make a big difference when combined thoughtfully.
