Every cousin gets a card or money… except me

It’s happened three years in a row now. Every cousin gets a birthday gift or card from grandma. I get… nothing.

It’s small, I know. But it still hurts. Especially when she swears she “didn’t forget anyone.”

Is it wrong that I take it personally?

It’s common for individuals to take it personally when they don’t receive the same recognition as others, particularly on personal milestones like birthdays. This experience can lead to questioning the relationship dynamics and feeling isolated within the family. It’s important to recognize that sometimes forgetfulness is unintentional, possibly due to age, distractions, or misunderstanding and not a reflection of personal feelings. However, the emotional impact remains valid and acknowledging one’s feelings is a healthy step toward processing this pain. To address these feelings, consider openly communicating with family members about your feelings. Sharing your experience might foster understanding and even prompt a change in how celebrations are managed within the family. Additionally, building new traditions or celebrating with friends can provide a sense of belonging and joy. Many people find solace in online support communities where stories like “My grandma always forgets me on my birthday” resonate strongly. These platforms can offer advice, empathy, and reassurance that others understand the pain of feeling excluded. Ultimately, nurturing self-compassion and seeking supportive relationships both inside and outside the family can help mitigate the emotional toll of being left out. Remember, your worth is not defined by the gifts or cards you receive but by who you are as a person.

Just joke with her about it.. maybe it’s getting to that time where her memory is starting to degrade. Spend time with her. Sometimes you may remind her of another cousin which may get her confused. Assume the best
