How I got my dream social media marketing job

From Media Assistant at an ad agency to leading Social Media at a tech company here’s how I made the jump to my dream role and how you can too!

1. If you want to work in social media start posting on social media! I got so many opportunities from growing my own TikTok account. Being able to grow an account and show measurable results (example I grew my TikTok from 0-10k followers in 90 days) is huge for hiring managers!

2. Be sure to create a strong portfolio! I prefer wix, but there are a ton of great options. I update mine monthly with my most viral videos, new campaigns, analytics, etc.

3. Network!! This word used to intimidate me so much because I didn’t have a network. I wanted to work in social media but I didn’t know anyone else who already was in the industry. That’s okay- don’t be afraid to cold reach out to people on LinkedIn asking how they got started. So many people are willing to chat and give out great tips!

... Read moreIn today’s competitive social media marketing landscape, demonstrating real-world growth and engagement is more important than ever. Aside from creating content, developing a portfolio that highlights your best work, including viral videos and detailed analytics, can set you apart from other candidates. Keeping your portfolio updated monthly reflects your ongoing efforts and adaptability to new trends. Another crucial element is mastering various social media platforms, especially emerging ones like TikTok. Showing measurable results, such as growing an account from zero to thousands of followers in a short time, proves your understanding of audience engagement and content strategies. This track record is highly valued by hiring managers. Networking remains a powerful tool, even if it initially feels daunting. Cold messaging professionals on LinkedIn or other platforms to learn about their career paths can open doors to mentorship and job opportunities. Many industry experts are willing to share advice and insights if approached politely and genuinely. Additionally, staying updated on social media marketing trends, algorithm changes, and tools for analytics will enhance your expertise. Platforms like LinkedIn Learning, HubSpot Academy, and Google’s Digital Garage offer free courses to deepen your knowledge. Finally, consider joining marketing communities on social media or forums to exchange ideas, get feedback, and stay motivated. Engaging with a community creates accountability and continuous learning, both key to advancing in your dream social media marketing role.
