Reality of flying to college

2025/8/27 Edited to

... Read moreWhew, what a whirlwind! Moving to college, especially when you're flying, is an adventure in itself. I remember staring at my white suitcase and thinking, 'How am I going to fit everything I need for a whole semester in here?' It wasn't just the suitcase, though. There were other pieces of *luggage*, a couple of cardboard boxes shipped ahead, and the daunting task of unpacking it all once I arrived. One of the biggest lessons I learned, almost like a 'founder' of my own dorm-room experience, is to be strategic from the start. For instance, my white suitcase wasn't just a fashion choice; it was practical. It stood out on the baggage carousel, and its hard shell protected my more fragile items. Inside, I meticulously organized clothes using packing cubes, which made the unpacking process so much easier. I also packed essential toiletries and a change of clothes in my carry-on, just in case my main luggage was delayed. Then came the moment of truth: getting to my dorm. The image of those cardboard boxes stacked in my room, filled with white furniture components for my new desk and shelves, felt overwhelming. It's not just about opening boxes; it's about assembly! I wish someone had told me to bring a small toolkit. Putting together that bed frame was a two-person job, and my roommate and I had a good laugh (and maybe a little frustration) figuring it out. Beyond the big stuff, I found that having a 'first-night box' within my luggage was a lifesaver. This included a towel, sheet set, PJs, phone charger, and some snacks. It meant I didn't have to immediately dive into the chaos of full-blown unpacking after a long flight. The true reality of flying to college and moving in is that it's a marathon, not a sprint. Don't expect to have everything perfectly organized on day one. Give yourself grace. Focus on getting the essentials set up – your bed, your basic storage, and a functional study space. For instance, I made sure my desk was clear for my laptop right away, even if other furniture components were still waiting to be assembled. Looking back, if I were to give advice as a 'college move-in founder,' I'd say: Pack smart: Choose versatile luggage like a spacious, durable *white suitcase*. Prioritize essentials: What do you need for the first 24-48 hours? Pack it separately. Expect assembly: Many dorms require you to set up your own bed frame or other *furniture components*. YouTube tutorials are your friend! Embrace the mess: Unpacking takes time. Enjoy the process of nesting and making your new space feel like home. It’s all part of the exciting journey of college life!

Flying to college? Stressful. Unpacking? Even more stressful. I'd rather just stay home tbh.
