The idea that "if I love you, I will slowly become Niki until it's too late and I destroy the whole thing" speaks to the risk of losing oneself in the process of loving another person. This is a common challenge many face when their obsession or intense attachment starts to blur the boundaries between their own identity and that of their partner. To avoid this, I found it helpful to regularly check in with myself about my feelings and behaviors. Journaling has been a powerful tool for understanding when I'm overextending emotionally or compromising my values. It’s important to remember that love should enhance your sense of self, not diminish it. Additionally, setting healthy boundaries and communicating openly with your partner can prevent the kind of emotional takeover that leads to relationship strain. Self-awareness allows you to recognize these patterns early and take action before they cause damage. Lastly, engaging in activities that reinforce your individuality—like hobbies, friendships, and personal goals—is vital. These efforts reinforce who you are independently of the relationship, making your love more balanced and sustainable. By practicing these strategies, anyone can foster a love life that respects both personal identity and deep connection, helping to avoid the pitfalls of obsession and loss of self.
