“Why bother spelling it like that?”
My son’s name is Rhys (pronounced Reece). So imagine my shock when a random woman came up to me and bluntly asked: “Why the hell would you spell it like that?” I calmly explained it’s the Welsh version, but she just went: “But why bother?”
I told her it’s part of our culture, our heritage, and that it’s a totally legitimate way to spell the name. But she wouldn’t let it go, going on about how it belongs in that “Tragedeigh” where people mock “weird” names. I tried to brush it off but she kept running her mouth, acting like I’d committed some huge parenting sin.
Finally, I’d had enough, I snapped and told her to shut the hell up. And what did she do? She acted all offended, saying my reaction was “way over the top.” Excuse me? You’re berating me for honoring my culture with my kid’s name, what did she expect?
