A PLEA UNDERSTANDING AND BELONGING

Living with autism often means navigating a world that isn’t always built for how we experience it. In many social environments, including churches and community groups, people like me can feel invisible or misunderstood despite being surrounded by others. From my own experience, what helps most is when others make even small efforts to be patient and understand that our silence or awkwardness isn’t a lack of interest but a way of processing the world. It’s important to recognize that social cues that come naturally to most can be challenging for autistic individuals. Trying to fit into settings designed around neurotypical expectations can be exhausting and isolating. What I’ve learned is that genuine belonging is less about fitting a mold and more about mutual respect and kindness. When communities embrace diversity in thinking and communication, they become richer and safer spaces for everyone. I encourage readers to extend compassion to those who may seem different or quiet. Rather than judging or excluding, offering a simple chance to belong can transform someone's experience profoundly. Creating awareness about autism and mental health within groups can also pave the way for more sensitive interactions and supportive environments. In my journey, Christlike love—centered on kindness, patience, and acceptance—provides a model for how communities can grow to welcome each individual genuinely. No one should feel 'too different' to be accepted. By fostering empathy and understanding, we can ensure that no one has to feel alone in a room full of people.
