Being Understood Doesn’t Mean

Living with autism, I've come to realize that being truly understood goes beyond mere tolerance—it's about acceptance and respect for who I am without having to mask or hide my identity. Early in my life, I often felt compelled to act "normal"—to suppress my autistic traits—in order to gain respect or be heard. However, this effort sometimes fell short because understanding others requires more than just surface-level awareness; it demands empathy and willingness to see beyond stereotypes. From personal experience, I've noticed that some people are willing to listen and treat me kindly, which creates meaningful connections. Unfortunately, others dismiss my feelings or ignore my opinions, which can be deeply discouraging. This often stems from misconceptions about autism or unconscious biases that prevent them from truly appreciating the diversity of human experience. What’s taught me the most is that those who judge or misunderstand are often reflecting their own issues rather than any deficiency in me. That realization has empowered me to stop trying to erase aspects of myself and instead focus on finding spaces and people who choose understanding over judgment. Because autism doesn't lessen the validity of my thoughts, feelings, or voice—it enriches my perspective. Building a world where different is not seen as less, but as human, requires all of us to challenge assumptions and foster genuine inclusion. Sharing my story is my way of encouraging others to embrace authenticity and to seek connection rooted in real understanding, not just tolerance. Respecting individuality means accepting people for who they truly are, and that is what everyone deserves.
