HOW TO MAKE CANDLES

2024/6/21 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you've decided to dive into the wonderful world of making your own candles! It's such a rewarding craft, and trust me, once you start, you'll be hooked. Beyond the basic steps, I've picked up a few insider tips and tricks that really make a difference. First off, let's talk about wax. When I first started, I just grabbed whatever wax I could find, but getting to know the different types really elevated my candle game. Soy wax is my absolute favorite for homemade candles. It’s natural, burns cleaner, and gives off a lovely, soft glow. Plus, it holds fragrance beautifully! You'll often see terms like "container wax" or "pillar wax" – make sure you pick a container wax if you're pouring into jars, as it's formulated to adhere to the sides. Beeswax is another fantastic, natural option, offering a longer burn time and a subtle honey scent, but it can be a bit trickier to work with for beginners. Paraffin wax is common and holds strong scents, but it's petroleum-based, which some people prefer to avoid. Experimenting with different waxes is part of the fun, and you'll find your personal favorite! Next up, wicks – often underestimated but crucial for a good burn. The right wick size depends on your container's diameter and the type of wax you're using. A wick that’s too small will cause tunneling (where the candle burns down the middle, leaving wax on the sides), and a wick that’s too large will create a huge flame and burn too fast. Most wax suppliers will provide a guide for wick selection based on wax type and container size, so always check that out! I usually start with a medium braided cotton wick for my 3-inch wide soy candles and then adjust. Don't forget to trim your wick to about 1/4 inch before each burn to ensure a clean, even flame. And then there's the scent! This is where you can truly personalize your candles. You can choose between fragrance oils and essential oils. Fragrance oils come in an incredible variety of scents, from baked goods to fresh linen, and are specifically formulated for candles. Essential oils are natural plant extracts but can be more volatile and might not have as strong a 'cold throw' (scent when not burning) or 'hot throw' (scent when burning) as fragrance oils. Always make sure your chosen oil is "candle-grade." The general rule of thumb for fragrance load is 6-10% of your wax weight. I usually aim for 8% for a good strong scent. Add your fragrance oil when your wax has cooled to a specific temperature (usually around 180-185°F for soy wax) to ensure the best scent throw. Stir it gently for a couple of minutes to ensure it's fully incorporated. Finally, a couple of common issues I've faced: frosting and tunneling. Frosting looks like white, crystalline patches on the surface or sides of your soy candles; it’s completely natural and doesn't affect the burn or scent, but if you want to minimize it, try pouring at a slightly lower temperature. Tunneling, as mentioned, is often a wick issue. If you notice it, try a larger wick next time or let your candle burn long enough on its first use so the melt pool reaches the edges of the container. Safety first, always! Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from drafts and flammable materials. Making candles is wonderfully creative, so let your imagination flow and enjoy the process!
