I stepped into the lobby, ignoring the curious looks from my staff, and nodded curtly to her.
“Miss Winters,” I said, keeping my voice steady and businesslike. I’d spent years perfecting the art of keeping my emotions from showing — especially in a business setting. Today would be no different.
“Mr. North,” she replied, her voice as cool as the December wind outside, though I noticed her fingers curling into tight fists. Good. She was nervous. Nervous was better than naively optimistic, which was how she’d looked last time. Maybe she was starting to understand what this arrangement would entail. For both of us.
“Come with me,” I said, turning without waiting for her response. I could hear her footsteps behind me as I led her to my office. This wouldn’t be a conversation for anyone else’s ears, not even my assistant’s.
Once we were inside, I closed the door and gestured for her to sit. She took the seat across from my desk, perching on the edge as if ready to bolt at any second.
I settled into my own chair, leaning back and watching her. Letting the silence stretch out. People reveal things in silence. Weaknesses, discomforts, nervous habits. And in Holly’s case, that silence seemed to make her even more fidgety. She tapped her fingers against the arm of the chair, finally forcing herself to meet my gaze with an almost defiant look.
I couldn’t help the smirk that tugged at the corner of my mouth. I liked a challenge, and she had more spirit than I’d given her credit for. This would be… interesting.
“So,” she said finally, breaking the silence. “You said you had terms. I want to hear them. All of them.”
