How pregnancy brought us closer

Pregnancy and having a baby can bring you closer or further apart and it’s mostly up to you (I understand there are certain situations that are harder to control). But my husband and I did a few things I believe helped bring us closer even when things have been hard through this pregnancy.

We have priority time in the morning and evening.

We implemented this when we first got married and it’s a nonnegotiable for us. It helps us start and end our day connected and it doesn’t have to be a ton of time. I know it’s going to change a bit when baby girl gets here but we’ve been discussing it and have a plan (although we’re aware that plan needs to be flexible).

He talks to her and is always touching my belly.

It helps him bond with her and me and it makes me so happy.

He applies my stretch mark cream.

It’s a small thing for him to do, but it feels so intimate. Plus he’s always reminding me how beautiful I am when I’m so self conscious.

Solid communication is key!

I feel like this is just relationship advice in general, but having good communication allows us to be closer instead of pushing each other away. There have been struggles in pregnancy and expressing that to him and him truly listening has made a huge difference. And vice versa as well.

He comes to OBGYN appointments.

He can’t come to every appointment because of his work, but he has come to as many as he can. He loves coming to them not just to see baby girl or hear her heartbeat or be in the know but also to be there for me.

One effective way to strengthen the connection is by dedicating priority time in the morning and evening to check in with each other, helping maintain intimacy and emotional closeness despite changing routines. Consistent physical affection, such as the partner talking to and gently touching the baby bump, not only promotes bonding with the unborn child but also reassures the expectant mother, reducing her stress and enhancing mutual support. Applying stretch mark cream together is another intimate ritual that fosters care and affection, while boosting the mother's self-esteem amid body changes. Clear and empathetic communication is fundamental to navigating the challenges of pregnancy. Couples who openly express their feelings and actively listen to each other can prevent misunderstandings and emotional distance. Addressing worries, excitement, and physical changes candidly allows partners to feel supported and united. Attending OBGYN appointments together whenever possible engages both parents in the pregnancy journey, providing shared experiences such as hearing the baby's heartbeat or seeing ultrasounds. This participation reinforces the father's involvement, shows solidarity, and helps prepare both for parenthood. In summary, prioritizing time together, maintaining physical closeness, practicing open communication, and sharing pregnancy milestones contribute significantly to strengthening the couple’s bond during pregnancy. Embracing flexibility and understanding helps manage the inevitable challenges, paving the way for a resilient and loving partnership as the family grows.
