It's almost comical how persistent and, frankly, misguided some of these attempts are. I've lost count of how many times I've opened my inbox to find a message from someone completely oblivious to my identity, often starting with something like, 'You just haven't met the right guy yet,' or 'I bet I could change your mind.' It's not just annoying; it's incredibly invalidating. It dismisses who I am and who I love, as if my sexual orientation is a phase or a choice that can be 'fixed' by a man. Newsflash: it's not. My identity is inherent, and it's not up for debate or conversion. The sheer audacity of some people to think they possess the power to 'turn' someone straight is bewildering. It speaks volumes about a lack of understanding and respect for queer identities. What I've learned over time is that these interactions often come from a place of ignorance, and sometimes, a blatant disregard for boundaries. It's frustrating because it takes mental energy to constantly re-educate or simply ignore. My go-to response (or lack thereof) has become about protecting my peace. Engaging often just fuels the fire, inviting more unsolicited opinions and arguments. So, I usually opt for a quick block or simply leaving it unread. Because, trust me, when men slide into my DMs thinking they're going to be the one to make me straight... they're not. This isn't a challenge; it's a statement of fact about my lived experience. For anyone else out there experiencing this, whether it's in your DMs or in real life, know that you're not alone. Your identity is valid, and you don't owe anyone an explanation or an argument. It can sometimes feel isolating when these messages pile up, making you wonder if you're constantly misunderstood. But remember, there's a huge, vibrant community out there that gets it. We support each other, we validate each other, and we stand firm in who we are. Surround yourself with people who celebrate you for who you are – your friends, your chosen family, and the online communities that uplift you. Let's continue to foster spaces where we can be authentically ourselves without fear of judgment or attempts to 'correct' us.
