This is me…

Ignore my messy bed head, but my two year old toddler woke up at 12 am and I tried to lay down in a bed next to him to get him asleep. (The bed they shared before we got them their own new beds) He of course climbed in with me as always. He said there were monsters in their room and pointed at the ceiling, so it was obvious to me he had a bad dream. I think the trip to Spirit Halloween scared him a lot… Anyway, he ended up finally falling asleep but was restless, kicking me and such. Around 1:30, I got up and smelled something strange. Then I remembered my husband had a crockpot on downstairs, slow cooking chicken for stock. When I went into the hall it smelled like smoke and I immediately freaked out. I had flashbacks from the fire, from when my home burned down at the first of this year. I ran to wake my husband to go downstairs to check because I needed to be sure I wasn’t imagining things. (This isn’t the first time since the fire that I’ve imagined it happening all over again.) He went down to check and told me he wasn’t sure why it smelled like that, because it didn’t smell that way downstairs, and said everything was fine and went to bed without a worry in the works. Meanwhile, I’m still laying here at 2:45 in the morning, not able to sleep because I’m worried my house will burn. I’m tired of feeling this way. I’m tired of crying over it and all we lost. How close we came to losing ourselves. And now I can’t seem to function properly. My career as an author is even taking a hit because I’m just too tired to write, while taking care of my toddlers and I just feel like the walls are closing in. My husband says I need therapy. Does it actually work? Does it make this kind of worry go away? I know it’s not a cure all, but would it stop me from feeling like the sky is falling? #letachat #traumadump #PTSD #lemon8diarychallenge #safespace #traumahealing #haloween2024 #lemon8challenge

... Read moreExperiencing trauma, especially from significant events like house fires, can lead to heightened anxiety and various emotional challenges. After such events, many parents find themselves grappling with fears not just for their own safety, but also for the well-being of their children. Nighttime can amplify these fears; children may have nightmares or express fears of the dark due to their vivid imaginations. For parents, this often translates into chronic worry and disrupted sleep patterns, as seen in this compelling personal story. Coping strategies can significantly enhance both parental resilience and children's emotional regulation. Engaging in open dialogues with children about their fears is crucial, helping them articulate their feelings. Creating a comforting bedtime routine, possibly incorporating soothing rituals, can also ease nighttime anxieties. Furthermore, resources like therapy provide supportive environments where concerns can be addressed constructively. While it may feel daunting, therapy can be an effective means of working through anxiety, equipping individuals with coping mechanisms and a stronger foundation for emotional well-being. For those still in the grip of post-traumatic stress reactions, reaching out to support networks, engaging in mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or meditation, and leaning on friends or community resources can facilitate healing. Professionals often recommend focusing on self-care and healthy coping mechanisms, emphasizing that recovery is a process which may take time but can lead to a renewed sense of security and confidence.
