Ouray, CO
Just a few pictures from our weekend trip to Ouray, Colorado!
Ouray, Colorado, often dubbed the 'Switzerland of America,' is an absolute dream for anyone craving adventure and breathtaking mountain scenery. Having just returned from a fantastic trip in August, I can confidently say it's a must-visit for thrill-seekers! If you’re looking to plan an Ouray itinerary for adventure seekers, here’s how we packed our weekend with unforgettable experiences. From the moment we drove into town, passing through a winding scenic road that leads into a tunnel carved into a mountain, I knew this place was special. The towering rock formations and lush evergreen trees set the stage for an epic getaway. So, if you're like me and love exploring, here’s a potential itinerary to help you make the most of your Ouray adventure: Day 1: Arrival & Town Exploration After settling into our cozy rental, we started our adventure by exploring the charming town of Ouray. We grabbed some delicious pastries from a local bakery – the perfect fuel after a long drive! Our first activity was a hike to Box Canyon Falls Park. It’s an incredible sight to see a tall waterfall cascading down a steep, rocky cliff face, and the walk through the gorge is exhilarating. Later, we took a leisurely stroll around town, admiring the historic architecture and soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. We found a great spot for dinner with views of the surrounding mountains – nothing beats dining with such a majestic backdrop! Day 2: High Mountain Thrills & Relaxation This was our main adventure day! We rented a Jeep and headed out to tackle Engineer Pass. The off-road journey was absolutely incredible, offering breathtaking views of a mountain valley densely covered with evergreen trees, leading up to prominent peaks under a vast sky. We stopped at several points to take in the panoramic vistas – you’ll see some of the most rugged rock formations imaginable. For those who prefer hiking, there are countless trails offering similar stunning scenery. After a day of adrenaline-pumping exploration, we unwound at one of Ouray’s famous hot springs. It was the perfect way to soothe tired muscles while watching the sunset over the San Juan Mountains. Day 3: Scenic Drives & Iconic Views On our last day, we couldn't leave without experiencing more of Ouray’s iconic views. We drove a section of the Million Dollar Highway, making sure to stop at the 'Ouray, CO Switzerland of America Look Out Point.' The views from here are truly unparalleled, giving you a full appreciation of why Ouray earned its famous nickname. It’s a great spot for photos and just to marvel at nature’s grandeur. Before heading out, we enjoyed one last coffee and another pastry, reminiscing about all the amazing sights and adventures. Ouray is also incredibly pet-friendly, and we even spotted a small, light-colored dog comfortably sleeping in a car seat booster – a reminder that your furry friends can join the adventure too! Tips for Your Ouray Adventure: Gear Up: Bring layers, sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and sun protection. The weather can change quickly in the mountains! Plan Ahead: Especially for popular activities like Jeeping or hot springs, consider booking in advance, particularly during peak season. Respect Nature: Stay on marked trails, pack out what you pack in, and observe wildlife from a distance. Ouray truly offers an unforgettable experience for adventure seekers. Trust me, you'll want to add this gem to your Colorado travel list!
