Ways to Support An Indie Author (Like Me!)
If you’re wondering the best ways to support indie authors (authors who self publish or publish with an independent publishing house not part of the big 5) here are four things you can do!
1. Buy a copy of the book 🥰
A great way to support an indie author is to buy a copy of their book or read it on Kindle Unlimited! KU is where a lot of authors get majority of their royalties. And if you liked the book on KU, and love trophies, buy a physical copy! Some authors also sell signed copies directly through their websites.
2. Leave a review ✍🏼
Reviews are essential to indie author success. Leaving a rating and a review on Goodreads, Amazon, Storygraph, or just telling a friend is an amazing way to get the word out!
3. Post on social media📱
Social media, as we all know, is an amazing tool to get attention on new books. If you loved a book, post about it! Just make sure you don’t tag the author in any negative reviews or feedback reviews, even if they’re 4 or 5 stars. However, every author is different in their boundaries, so just be mindful of that!
4. DON’T PIRATE BOOKS 🚫
This should go without saying, but don’t pirate books. Authors sometimes spend years and hundreds, even thousands, of dollars to get their books published and when you pirate a book (read illegally) it really hurts the author. Pirating books is stealing.
If you’ve read this far, my name is H.K. Green and my debut cowboy romance novel, The Pieces We’ve Lost, is out now on Kindle Unlimited and paperback!

Supporting independent authors is vital to maintaining a diverse literary landscape. When you purchase a book from an indie author, you do more than just buy a product; you invest in their dreams and aspirations. Indie authors often lack the marketing power of large publishing houses, making community support crucial. Leaving reviews not only boosts the author’s visibility on platforms like Goodreads and Amazon, but it also provides valuable feedback that can help them improve their craft. Sharing your favorite reads on social media amplifies their reach, allowing others to discover hidden gems. It's important to remember that many indie authors pour their heart and soul into their work, often spending years developing their stories. Piracy undermines this effort and can deter them from creating future works. Instead, direct support—such as buying signed copies or promoting their work within your circles—can help foster a thriving ecosystem for book lovers. By supporting indie authors, you contribute to a rich tapestry of stories that reflect diverse voices and experiences in literature.
