From my first book to...
my soon-to-be released 20th book, doubt always meanders in.
Authors every time we sit down to write face a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, with doubt often meandering in unexpectedly. Having started from my first book and now approaching my 20th, I’ve learned that doubt is not a sign of failure but a companion on the creative path. Each project presents new challenges, whether it’s fear of not meeting expectations, worrying about the impact on readers, or simply the pressure to keep improving. Over time, I've found that acknowledging doubt rather than resisting it can be empowering. It pushes me to question my ideas, deepen my research, and refine my writing. Doubt also keeps me humble and motivates me to stay curious and open to new perspectives. When I notice doubt creeping in, I remind myself that every author, regardless of experience, faces similar moments of uncertainty. One useful habit that has helped is setting small, manageable goals during the writing process. Breaking down a large project into daily or weekly targets makes the task less daunting and boosts confidence as each goal is met. Another strategy is seeking feedback from trusted readers or writing groups, which provides constructive insight and reassurance. Reflecting on this journey, I believe doubt, while challenging, ultimately enriches the writing experience. It encourages growth, resilience, and a deeper connection to the craft. For fellow authors or aspiring writers reading this, remember: doubt is a natural part of creativity, and embracing it can lead to your best work yet.
