Reality of imposter syndrome as an author

A topic I haven’t talked about lately is imposter syndrome. I know it’s not something we as authors like to acknowledge often (I hate jinxing my progress), but it still matters.

Some days, I feel great about my writing. Others, I’m totally lost and confused and want to throw the laptop out the window. But without that natural fear of failure, I wouldn’t be growing and learning new ways to combat these feelings healthily.

Authors, you are more than your doubts, fears, and feelings of “wtf am I even doing?” I promise it’s okay to celebrate yourself and your writing. You wouldn’t be doing this if your heart wasn’t in it and if you didn’t have important stories to share. Take time for yourself and remember to embrace every part of this journey. It’s worth it and so are you.

So here’s me smiling with a few summer romcoms I’m extremely proud of. These characters mean the world to me. They remind me of how far I’ve come and to never quit writing stories that make me smile💛

... Read moreImposter syndrome is a common experience among authors, regardless of their level of success. From feeling proud after completing a manuscript to doubting your abilities in quiet moments, these fluctuations can be overwhelming. What I've found helpful in managing these feelings is recognizing that imposter syndrome often signals growth. When you feel afraid or unsure, it’s usually because you are pushing your boundaries and evolving your craft. One effective strategy I've adopted is to create a ritual of celebrating small wins — whether that’s finishing a chapter or receiving positive feedback. This helps counterbalance the negative inner voice that questions your worth. Also, engaging with supportive communities, like those of indie authors or book enthusiasts on platforms such as BookTok and Instagram, provides encouragement and validation. Moreover, writing about your journey candidly, as this article exemplifies, can transform feelings of isolation into empowerment. Realizing you’re not alone in your struggles can renew motivation and foster resilience. Remember, your stories — like those charming summer romcoms mentioned — embody your passion and are meaningful to readers who connect with your characters and narratives. Finally, embracing imposter syndrome as part of the creative process allows you to move beyond fear and self-doubt. Every author’s path is unique, and by valuing your experiences and growth, you cultivate a sustainable and fulfilling writing career. Keep writing, keep believing, and let your heart guide your stories.
