Reminiscing… link in bio
The cell was quiet except for the low hum of the ventilation system and the occasional clank of metal somewhere down the tier. Darius lay flat on his back, one arm tucked behind his head, staring at a ceiling he had memorized years ago. Whenever the walls started feeling too close, he went somewhere else in his mind. Most nights, that somewhere was Keisha.
Tonight, he went all the way back to Belle High.
He could still see her standing sideways in front of her open locker, dressed in that green-and-gold cheerleading uniform, pretending she wasn’t watching him approach. Darius had been carrying more books than he planned on opening and trying his hardest to look like he had a reason to be standing there. Keisha turned toward him, that smile spreading across her face, and suddenly every smart thing he’d practiced saying disappeared from his head.
She had laughed at him that day. Not cruelly. That soft little laugh she made whenever she knew she’d gotten him flustered.
Darius smiled faintly in the darkness of his cell.
Back then, neither of them knew what life was going to ask of them. They were just two teenagers standing beside a row of green lockers, talking longer than either one of them needed to, finding reasons not to walk away. He hadn’t known that girl would become the woman whose letters he’d read beneath prison lights. He hadn’t known her name would become something he whispered to himself on the nights when six years felt impossible to survive.
He closed his eyes and let the memory hold him.
Soon, he told himself.
Soon he wouldn’t have to remember what it felt like to stand beside Keisha.
He’d be able to stand beside her again.
