BABY-PROOFING CHECKLIST!!!
I think the biggest mistake I’ve made in parenting so far is not baby proofing my house literally as soon as my daughter showed signs of crawling and pulling up on things. Now she has mastered both of those and we’re completely scrambling to try and order and install all of this stuff now that it’s too late because we literally cannot put her down anywhere since everything she wants to do/touch/pull up on is dangerous and we can’t take our eyes off her for a second!
I think I put it off for so long because I was like oh geez, there’s so many things to baby proof I don’t even know where to start. So to help you guys out, here’s a checklist of things that need baby proofing!! Of course this changes from household to household these are some of the most common/basic things you’ll need to do!

Okay, mamas and papas, let me tell you, if there's one thing I wish someone had screamed at me louder, it's to baby-proof EVERYTHING before your little one even thinks about crawling! Seriously, learn from my experience. I thought I had time, but then one day my baby was pulling up on everything, and our home suddenly felt like a giant hazard course. We were scrambling, trying to install locks and covers with a speedy crawler underfoot – not ideal! It's not just about ticking boxes; it's about understanding what dangers lurk and how to truly make your home a safe haven. When it comes to baby-proofing, knowing what not to do is just as critical as knowing what to do. Let's dive into some common areas that often lead to questions: 1. Outlet Covers: A Non-Negotiable for Tiny Hands Those small holes in your wall are irresistible to curious fingers. Basic plug covers are a start, but clever toddlers can remove them. I've found sliding outlet covers or entire childproof wall plates more secure for high-traffic areas. This simple fix prevents serious electrical shocks. 2. Baby Gates: More Than Just for Stairs Sturdy, hardware-mounted gates at the top and bottom of any staircase are essential. But think creatively! We ended up needing a gate for our kitchen doorway. Cooking with a toddler weaving between my legs was a recipe for disaster. Gates help designate 'no-go' zones, providing temporary peace of mind. 3. Small Objects: The Hidden Choking Hazard You Must Avoid This is where vigilance is key. Never, ever keep coins, small toys, button batteries, or anything that can fit through a toilet paper roll tube within a child's reach. Get down on your hands and knees and view your home from your baby's perspective. You'll be shocked at what you find! Loose buttons, forgotten earrings, even pet food – all potential choking hazards. This is truly one of the things you absolutely don't want to miss. 4. Cleaning Products & Chemicals: Secure Them High and Away! This seems obvious, but complacency can creep in. Bleach, detergents, and even seemingly harmless dish soap are incredibly dangerous. Store all cleaning products in high, locked cabinets. We installed child safety locks on our under-sink cabinets, giving me peace of mind knowing those toxic items were inaccessible. Other Essential Baby-Proofing Spots (as the OCR reminded me!) Anchor Furniture to the Wall: This is HUGE. Dressers, bookshelves, TVs – anything that can tip over needs to be secured with anti-tip straps. It takes minutes but could save a life. Cabinet Doors & Drawers: Especially in the kitchen and bathroom where sharp objects or chemicals reside. Magnetic locks or simple latches work wonders. Toilet Seats: A toilet lock prevents curious toddlers from playing in the water, or worse, falling in. Sharp Corners: Coffee tables, fireplace hearths – apply soft corner guards to prevent painful bumps and bruises. Cords: Electrical cords, blind cords – tie them up, tuck them away, or use cord concealers. Any dangling cord is a strangulation risk. Oven/Stove: Knob covers can prevent accidental turn-ons, and stove guards keep little hands from touching hot surfaces. Doors: Consider finger pinch guards to protect tiny fingers, and doorknob covers if your little one is an escape artist! It's a lot, I know! But tackling these things early, before your baby starts crawling, makes a world of difference. Your child's safety is absolutely worth the effort. Stay diligent, parents!
