Procrastination in Nursing School😞

Today was just one of those days… there are about 12 things I could be studying for, 3 assignments due in two hours, and I spent the day in bed. I forced myself out and cleaned the house but man am I exhausted!

The worst thing about it is that because I took the day for myself to relax, I am now stressed more than I was before hand!

... Read moreI totally get that feeling! There are days when the sheer weight of nursing school deadlines, complex topics, and clinical prep just makes staying in bed feel like the only option. It's a common struggle, and honestly, acknowledging it is the first step. You're not alone if you've ever felt that crushing stress after 'relaxing' because your to-do list just grew bigger in your head. For me, procrastination in nursing school often stems from a few places. Sometimes it's the overwhelming amount of material – how do you even start studying for 12 different things when each one feels like an entire textbook? Other times, it's the high stakes. The fear of not understanding a concept, or getting an assignment wrong, can be paralyzing. And let's be real, nursing school is exhausting. Between lectures, labs, clinicals, and trying to have a semblance of a life, burnout is a constant threat. Over time, I've tried to develop a few strategies to pull myself out of that procrastination pit. Here’s what’s helped me, maybe it can help you too: First, breaking down tasks is a game-changer. Instead of seeing 'study for pharmacology,' I break it into 'review diuretics for 30 minutes,' 'make flashcards for cardiac meds,' or 'practice dosage calculations for 15 minutes.' Suddenly, the mountain becomes a series of achievable hills. I often use a timer for these mini-sessions, like the Pomodoro Technique, where I focus intensely for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Those colorful pens in my gray zippered case aren't just for looking pretty; they help me organize my notes into these manageable chunks. Second, I’ve realized the importance of intentional self-care. Unlike just spending a day in bed feeling guilty, I now schedule short, active breaks. Maybe it’s a 15-minute walk, listening to a favorite song, or just stepping away from my desk. It’s about recharging, not escaping. I also try to keep my goals in sight. My 'NURSE in progress' badge reel isn't just for clinicals; sometimes, just seeing it on my desk reminds me of the bigger picture and why I'm pushing through. Third, creating a focused study environment can make a huge difference. For me, that means clearing my desk and having my essential tools ready. My black stethoscope with a purple attachment (and yes, sometimes I even pull out the Littmann Cardiology IV box just to admire it for a second!) sits nearby, a constant reminder of the incredible responsibility and reward that awaits. It's not about being perfect, but about minimizing distractions and mentally preparing for the task at hand. Finally, don't underestimate the power of accountability. Sometimes, just telling a classmate what I plan to achieve in a study session makes me more likely to stick to it. Or, joining a study group, even for a short time, can provide that gentle push. We're all in this together, and sharing these struggles, even just on a platform like this, shows we're actively seeking ways to be better students and future nurses. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and there will always be days where procrastination wins. But with small, consistent changes, we can definitely reduce its grip and make nursing school a less stressful, more manageable journey. Keep going; you've got this!

I get you, one time I ended up just bawling it out and told myself to just turn things in late than never. That mindset helped me become stress free as a few assignments late is never the end of it as long as its just those few assignments. After that, I got back on track. Good luck, decide whats best for you!
