I had a panic attack on a bridge this summer

Panic attacks don’t always wait until we’re in private. Sometimes they show up in the most inconvenient, public places. That day on the bridge reminded me how overwhelming anxiety can feel, and how important it is to lean on the people we trust.

Have you ever had a panic attack in public? What helped you get through it?

... Read morePanic attacks can strike without warning, even in crowded or public spaces where vulnerability feels especially pronounced. Many people find themselves unprepared when anxiety escalates in such environments, like crossing a high bridge. This experience can involve physical symptoms such as shaky hands, difficulty breathing, and feeling lightheaded, often accompanied by intense fear. A common trigger, as highlighted in the story, is the fear of heights, which can compound anxiety and create a sense of paralysis—feeling unable to move forward or back. Grounding techniques can be invaluable during these moments. These include focusing on breathing patterns, feeling physical objects like holding a friend's hand, or mentally reciting calming phrases to reorient oneself to the present. Having a supportive companion is crucial. Involving trusted friends can provide a tangible source of comfort and stability, helping individuals feel less isolated in their anxiety. Additionally, recognizing panic attack symptoms early and accepting them without judgment can reduce panic’s intensity. For those who experience panic attacks in public frequently, professional help such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or exposure therapy can be effective. CBT teaches coping skills tailored to individual triggers, while gradual exposure can lessen fear associated with specific places like bridges. If you’ve endured a panic attack in public, sharing your story can also offer relief and connection to others who understand. Community conversations around anxiety — such as those tagged #girltalk or #girlpov — create safe spaces that foster empathy and support. Remember, panic attacks are common, and managing them is possible with awareness, practice, and trusted allies.
