The raw, emotional truth of dealing with flood damage alone, especially when your world is already turned upside down, is something no one can truly prepare for. After the initial shock described in my first post, the reality of the cleanup hit like another wave. I'm learning every day, and if you're ever in a similar situation, here are some things I've found helpful or wish I'd known right away. First, and I can't stress this enough, prioritize safety. Before I even thought about moving anything, I made sure the power was off in the affected areas. Floodwaters can hide electrical hazards, and with my fur babies and mom needing all my attention, I couldn't risk another emergency. My second immediate concern was getting my 'handicapable' cats to a completely dry, elevated, and safe space, away from the chaos and potential contaminants. It's so hard to see them stressed, so I tried to make their temporary spot as comforting as possible with their familiar blankets and toys. For my mom, who just came home from the hospital, keeping her calm and away from the immediate mess was crucial. I set up a clean, quiet area in an unaffected part of the house, regularly checking on her and ensuring she had everything she needed without being exposed to the dampness or stress of the cleanup. Now, onto the actual repair work – it's a marathon, not a sprint. The thought of replacing the bathroom floor, fixing the toilet, and tearing down walls felt insurmountable. What helped me get started was breaking it down into tiny, manageable steps. First, documenting everything with photos and videos for potential insurance claims or assistance, even if you feel like you're doing it all alone, is vital. Then, the water removal. I rented a wet/dry vac and just started sucking up water, bit by bit. It’s back-breaking, but seeing less water was a small victory. For the saturated carpet, there was no saving it; it had to go immediately to prevent mold. I learned quickly that ventilation is your best friend – fans, open windows (if safe) – to dry things out as fast as possible. Sanitizing is next, and I've been researching safe ways to clean and disinfect without harming my pets or mom's health. It’s a constant balance of wanting to move fast but needing to be careful. Emotionally, this is draining. There are moments when I just want to sit down and cry, feeling completely overwhelmed. But then I look at my fur babies and my mom, and I know I have to keep going. I've found that reaching out to friends, even just to vent, helps immensely. Sometimes, people in your community might offer help you didn't even know you needed, so don't be afraid to share your struggle.
