... Read moreHey everyone! If you're dreaming of an Australian island getaway that's packed with adventure but still feels like a true escape, you absolutely have to put Moreton Island on your list. I recently visited, and it was even better than I imagined! It’s just a short ferry ride from Brisbane, but you feel a world away. First off, let's talk about the incredible things to do. The original post touched on some highlights, but there's so much more to explore! Beyond snorkeling or diving the famous Tangalooma Wrecks (which are a must-do, trust me!), I highly recommend trying out the sandboarding. Seriously, hurtling down those massive dunes is an adrenaline rush like no other. We also went on a quad bike tour through the island's interior, which was a fantastic way to see more of the diverse landscape. Kayaking around the calmer bays, especially at sunset, was another unforgettable experience. And for nature lovers, definitely keep an eye out for dolphins, dugongs, and even whales during migration season (June to November). Don't forget to hike up to the Cape Moreton Lighthouse for some breathtaking panoramic views – totally worth the effort! Now, a super common question I had before my trip was: are there shops on Moreton Island? This is really important to know for planning! The short answer is, yes, but don't expect a big shopping mall! The main hub is at Tangalooma Island Resort, where you'll find a small general store for essentials like snacks, drinks, and some basic toiletries. There's also a gift shop. If you're staying at other campsites or resorts, they might have their own small kiosks. However, for anything substantial like specific groceries, medications, or a wider range of items, you really need to bring it with you from the mainland. Think of it as part of the island's charm – it forces you to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty without the usual distractions. So, pack smart and plan your meals! Speaking of the Tangalooma Wrecks, they truly are the jewel in Moreton Island's crown. These fifteen sunken ships were deliberately scuttled to create a safe harbor for boats and a fantastic artificial reef. Snorkeling here was absolutely magical; the water is so clear, and you're surrounded by vibrant coral and thousands of fish. It’s suitable for all skill levels, and you can even hire gear right there. If you're not a strong swimmer, consider a guided tour or a glass-bottom boat trip to still enjoy the incredible underwater world. Getting there is pretty straightforward. You can catch a passenger or vehicle ferry from various points in Brisbane, like Holt Street Wharf. It's best to book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season. As for accommodation, you've got options ranging from glamping tents and basic campsites to the more resort-style experience at Tangalooma. I'd suggest doing some research to find what suits your budget and style. And what to pack? Definitely swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, sturdy shoes for exploring, insect repellent, and plenty of water. A waterproof camera is also a great idea for capturing those underwater moments! Moreton Island truly is a gem, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. It's a place where memories are made, whether you're exploring shipwrecks, riding sand dunes, or simply enjoying the pristine beaches. I can't wait to go back!
