Zakynthos
2024/11/26 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you're eyeing Zakynthos, and wondering if this Greek gem truly lives up to the hype? Having just returned from an incredible trip, I can wholeheartedly say, yes, Zakynthos is absolutely worth visiting! Beyond the postcard-perfect beaches, there’s a vibrant energy and so many unique activities that make it an unforgettable destination. One of the first things that struck me about ZAKYNTHOS was the sheer variety of its landscapes. While Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is undeniably stunning, don't just stop there. For that iconic bird's-eye view, head to the clifftop viewpoint near Anafonitria Monastery – the sight of the shipwreck nestled in that turquoise cove is simply breathtaking. But to truly experience Navagio, you have to take a boat trip. Many tours leave from Porto Vromi or Agios Nikolaos, offering different perspectives and even a chance to swim in the cove itself (though access to the beach part is often restricted now for safety). The water is an unbelievable shade of blue, unlike anything I've ever seen! The Blue Caves are another absolute must-do. Seriously, get on one of those small boat tours. These boats can actually go inside the caves, revealing the most incredible iridescent blue light reflecting off the water. It feels like swimming in liquid sapphire! I'd recommend going in the morning when the sun hits just right for the most dramatic effect. It’s a magical experience that truly showcases the island's natural beauty. And let's talk about the food! Greek cuisine is always a highlight, but Zakynthos has its own specialities. Beyond souvlaki, which is always a winner, definitely try the local ladotyri cheese – it’s a spicy, hard cheese that’s fantastic with a glass of local wine. Also, keep an eye out for fresh seafood, especially grilled octopus or calamari. For dessert, try pasteli (sesame and honey bars) or mandolato (nougat). Eating out was always an adventure, with tavernas offering stunning views and warm hospitality. For wildlife lovers, Laganas Bay is famous for its loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Taking a boat trip here was truly special; we spotted a few swimming gracefully in their natural habitat. It's important to choose ethical tour operators who respect the turtles' space. It's not just an activity; it's a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the island's conservation efforts. To really uncover the island's charm and find your own hidden spots, renting a car or scooter is non-negotiable. This gave me the freedom to explore beyond the main tourist hubs. We discovered serene coves like Porto Limnionas, perfect for a quiet swim, and the unique sulfur springs of Xigia Beach, known for its therapeutic waters. Driving through the olive groves and quaint villages was an experience in itself. Even the capital, Zakynthos Town, offers charming streets, museums, and a lovely waterfront promenade. Whether you're after adventure, relaxation, delicious food, or stunning scenery, ZAKYNTHOS truly delivers. It's an island that invites you to explore, indulge, and fall in love with the Ionian Sea. Every corner holds a new discovery, making it incredibly rewarding and unequivocally worth every moment of your trip!

Greece has alooooot more to offer than just Santorini and Mykonos (as dreamy as they are). If you’re craving something a little more off the mainstream path—where the beaches are just as stunning, the villages still feel authentic, and the pace is slower—these islands should be on your radar.
