São Miguel Island, Portugal 🇵🇹

São Miguel Island, the largest of Portugal’s Azores archipelago, is a paradise of volcanic landscapes, lush greenery, and stunning coastal views. Known as the “Green Island,” it’s famous for its geothermal hot springs, crater lakes, and picturesque villages.

Tips for visiting São Miguel Island:

1. Explore Sete Cidades: Visit the twin crater lakes, one green and one blue, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush vegetation.

2. Bathe in Hot Springs: Relax in the natural thermal pools at Furnas or Ponta da Ferraria.

3. Whale Watching: Take a boat tour to spot whales and dolphins in the Atlantic waters.

4. Hike to Lagoa do Fogo: Enjoy breathtaking views of this pristine crater lake, accessible via scenic trails.

5. Taste Local Cuisine: Try traditional Azorean dishes like Cozido das Furnas, a stew cooked underground using volcanic heat.

São Miguel Island
2024/11/28 Edited to

... Read moreSão Miguel Island truly captured my heart with its incredible natural beauty and unique experiences. While the main article covers some fantastic highlights, I wanted to share a few more details and personal recommendations to help you make the most of your trip, especially when it comes to exploring all the amazing attractions! Diving Deeper into Sete Cidades: My visit to Sete Cidades was absolutely breathtaking. Beyond just seeing the twin lakes, I highly recommend driving up to the Vista do Rei viewpoint for that iconic panoramic shot. But for an even more immersive experience, don't miss the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno. It's a bit of a walk from the parking lot, but the views of the lakes, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains are simply unparalleled. I spent ages just soaking it all in! If you love hiking, there are trails around the caldera that offer different perspectives of the green and blue lakes, allowing you to truly appreciate the volcanic landscape. More Hot Spring Bliss: While Furnas and Ponta da Ferraria are a must, each offers a distinct experience. In Furnas, besides the famous thermal pools at Terra Nostra Garden Park (which is beautiful to explore even without a dip), I also loved Poça da Dona Beija. It’s a series of smaller, more intimate pools often open late, making for a magical evening soak under the stars. Remember to bring an old swimsuit as the iron-rich water can stain! Ponta da Ferraria, on the other hand, is unique because it's a natural hot spring in the ocean, warmed by volcanic activity. You can swim there at low tide, experiencing the incredible sensation of warm and cold water currents mixing – it was an unforgettable dip! Beyond Lakes and Springs: Hidden Gems & Unique Experiences: São Miguel isn't just about its famous lakes. Here are a couple more attractions I discovered and absolutely loved: Chá Gorreana Tea Plantation: I was fascinated to learn that São Miguel is home to the only tea plantations in Europe! Visiting Chá Gorreana was a peaceful experience. You can walk through the lush green fields, learn about the tea-making process, and enjoy a free tasting. It's a perfect spot for a tranquil afternoon and an interesting change of pace. Pineapple Plantations: Yes, pineapples in the Azores! There are several greenhouses on the island where you can see how these delicious pineapples are grown. I stopped by the Arruda Pineapple Plantation – it was so cool to see the fruit at different stages of growth and then taste the incredibly sweet Azorean pineapple. Don't forget to try some pineapple liqueur or jam! It's a sweet, local treat. Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego: For stunning coastal views and beautifully manicured gardens, this viewpoint on the eastern side of the island is fantastic. It's a great stop for a picnic or just to enjoy the panoramic ocean scenery. To really explore all these incredible attractions, I found renting a car to be the most convenient option. The roads are well-maintained, and it gives you the flexibility to stop whenever a beautiful view catches your eye. São Miguel truly has something for every type of traveler, and I can't wait to go back and discover even more of its wonders!
