Fethiye

... Read moreAfter my incredible journey through Fethiye, I just had to share more about why this Turkish gem stole my heart! While the main article covers some fantastic highlights, I've got a few more tips and insights into making your Fethiye adventure truly unforgettable, especially if you're keen on discovering even more "things to do." Let's dive a bit deeper into some of the activities mentioned, and then I’ll sprinkle in a few more of my personal favorites. Paragliding over Ölüdeniz: Seriously, this is a bucket-list item! I remember the sheer thrill as I ran off Babadag Mountain, feeling the wind beneath me. If you’re considering it, book with a reputable company a day or two in advance, especially during peak season. Early morning flights often offer the calmest winds and clearest views. Don't forget to ask for the photo and video package – those memories are priceless! Exploring the Lycian Way: This ancient trail offers various sections, so you don't have to commit to the entire 500km! I did a shorter, guided hike near Kabak Beach, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes, carry plenty of water, and perhaps even pack a picnic. It's a fantastic way to connect with nature and history. Butterfly Valley: Getting there by boat from Ölüdeniz is an adventure in itself. Once you arrive, you can relax on the beach, swim in the turquoise waters, or hike up to the waterfall to spot those elusive butterflies (best seen in late spring/early summer). It’s a truly peaceful escape, and I loved just soaking up the sun there. But Fethiye offers so much more! Here are a few extra 'things to do' that I absolutely adored: 1. A Day Trip to Saklıkent Canyon: This was an unexpected highlight! Imagine wading, sometimes swimming, through a cool, narrow gorge with towering cliffs on either side. You can rent water shoes and explore on your own, or even try river tubing for an extra splash of fun. There are also lovely riverside restaurants where you can enjoy lunch with your feet dangling in the water. It’s a refreshing escape from the summer heat. 2. Wander Through Kayaköy Ghost Village: Just a short drive from Fethiye, this abandoned Greek village is incredibly atmospheric. Walking through the deserted stone houses and churches felt like stepping back in time. It’s a poignant place with a rich history, offering incredible photo opportunities and a quiet reflection on past lives. I spent a good few hours just exploring its nooks and crannies. 3. Take a 12-Island Boat Tour: While Butterfly Valley is great, a full-day boat trip around the Gulf of Fethiye is a must! These tours typically stop at several beautiful islands and secluded coves for swimming and snorkeling. The crystal-clear waters are irresistible, and you’ll often get a delicious onboard lunch. It’s a perfect way to relax and see more of the stunning Turquoise Coast. 4. Sunset at Calis Beach: If you’re looking for a more laid-back evening, head to Calis Beach. It’s famous for its spectacular sunsets. Grab a drink at one of the beachfront cafes and watch the sky explode with colors over the Mediterranean. It’s less crowded than Ölüdeniz and offers a different vibe. 5. Explore the Old Town & Paspatur: Beyond the fish market, Fethiye’s Old Town, known as Paspatur, is a charming labyrinth of narrow streets filled with shops selling everything from spices and Turkish delights to carpets and souvenirs. It’s a fantastic place to haggle, people-watch, and soak in the local atmosphere. I found some unique handmade jewelry there! My Final Tips for Fethiye: Best Time to Visit: Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer can be hot but perfect for beach activities. Getting Around: Dolmuş (shared mini-buses) are excellent and cheap for local travel. Taxis are readily available, and renting a scooter can be fun for exploring nearby areas if you're confident. Fethiye truly has something for everyone, whether you're an adrenaline junkie, a history buff, or just looking to relax by the sea. I left feeling utterly rejuvenated and already planning my return trip!
