because when you know (it's love), you'd know
love has never had to feel complicated, because love is meant to be simple.
in today's modern society of hook ups, casuals and situationships, it's understandable how many youths find the concept of love transactional and increasingly, meaningless. but truth is that we're all human beings, and we all want to be loved by someone.
in singapore, dates often feel transactional— with some females insisting on a guy paying for everything in a first date, and with some males judging females for their looks and body as first impression.
we're a goal-driven society, in the sense of we see everything as KPIs, potential and how it benefits us. we're also a society that chases prestige, thus we screen our potential partner by their educational background, their wealth and their looks. we can claim that it's human nature, but truth be told, you won't find your life partner this way.
yes, you might find a partner to marry— but if it's transactional to begin with, you'd end up tolerating and hating each other because it didn't start with loving someone for who they are.
realise how i don't deem a 'life partner' as a 'marriage partner'? because many marriages don't end up successful, and many marriages stay for the sake of staying instead of love. a life partner is someone that you'd constantly choose to love, over and over again through thick and thin.
love has never had to feel insecure. love has never had to feel tiring. love has never had to mean endless one-sided compromise.
love is simple, joyful and consistent.
if you can't communicate everything with your partner, then that person isn't the one for you.
From my personal experience, I’ve found that the real essence of love becomes clear when you stop viewing relationships as transactions or checklist achievements. In a world where dating apps and social pressures can make connections feel shallow, true love stands apart by its honesty and simplicity. I remember meeting someone while abroad, and despite the limited time, our connection was undeniable from the very first date. It lasted nine hours — something I wouldn’t have imagined tolerating with just anyone — and that’s when I knew there was something genuine. This resonates with the idea that “when you know, you know.” In Singapore, like many fast-paced societies, dating often feels like negotiating a contract: who will pay, how you look, your career standing — all these filters can create barriers. But what truly matters is the willingness to grow, support, and communicate openly. When both partners commit to loving each other authentically, despite differences and imperfections, that’s when love becomes liberating instead of burdensome. Love doesn’t have to be exhausting or insecure. It should uplift you and bring peace even in challenging times. If communication is a struggle, that’s a strong sign to reconsider. Real love means you can share everything without fear or reservation. Recognizing a life partner means valuing their personality and how they make you feel more than just their looks or status. It’s about choosing each other repeatedly, standing together through highs and lows, not just marrying for security or societal expectations. Ultimately, love should be fun and joyful — never feeling like a game or a series of compromises forced on one person. This mindset shift helped me see relationships as partnerships built on mutual care and consistent effort. When you truly know this, the chaotic world of modern dating begins to make sense, and love regains its beautiful simplicity.
