Best Baked Ziti Recipe

Made this baked ziti and actually got the kids to sit still long enough to eat it—solid win in my book. It’s easy, it’s comforting, and bonus: it reheats well for the next time you’re too tired to cook (which, let’s be real, is tomorrow).

Save it for your next busy mom night and let me know if it saves your sanity too!

Ingredients

• Pasta: 1 lb (16 oz) ziti or penne

• Meat: 1 lb Italian sausage (or ground beef/turkey)

• Olive oil: 2 tbsp

• Onion: 1 medium, diced

• Garlic: 3 cloves, minced

• Marinara sauce: 1 jar (24 oz)

• Tomato sauce: 1 can (8 oz)

• Seasonings: 1 tsp Italian seasoning, 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional), salt and pepper to taste

• Ricotta cheese: 15 oz

• Mozzarella cheese: 2 cups shredded (divided)

• Parmesan cheese: 1 cup shredded (divided)

• Egg: 1 large

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven: Set it to 375°F (190°C).

2. Cook the pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti and cook until al dente (about 2 minutes less than the package suggests). Drain and set aside.

3. Prepare the sauce:

• Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

• Add diced onion and garlic, cooking until softened (3-4 minutes).

• Add the Italian sausage (or ground meat) and cook until browned, breaking it into small pieces.

• Stir in the marinara sauce and tomato sauce. Add Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes (if using). Let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

4. Make the ricotta mixture: In a large bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, 1/2 cup Parmesan, the egg, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.

5. Assemble the baked ziti:

• In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.

• Add half of the cooked pasta, then spoon half of the ricotta mixture over the pasta. Spread it gently.

• Pour half of the meat sauce over the ricotta. Repeat the layers with the remaining pasta, ricotta mixture, and sauce.

• Sprinkle the top with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.

6. Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly.

7. Garnish and serve: Let the baked ziti sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

This dish is not only versatile but also allows for substitutions based on your family's preferences. You can add vegetables like spinach or zucchini for added nutrition or swap the Italian sausage for a vegetarian option like mushrooms or lentils. For a truly delicious baked ziti, consider using homemade marinara sauce or high-quality store-bought options to enhance flavor.
