Dried citrus for Yule ornaments 🎄

2024/12/11 Edited to

... Read moreOh my goodness, fellow decor lovers! If you're anything like me, you're always looking for ways to bring a little bit of natural magic into your home, especially during the Yule and holiday season. That's why I absolutely adore making dried citrus decorations! They're not just beautiful and fragrant; they also connect us to nature and traditional winter celebrations. You might think drying fruit is complicated, but trust me, it's incredibly simple, and the results are so rewarding. I usually grab a mix of ORANGES, LEMONS, LIMES, and sometimes even GRAPEFRUIT from my local store. The key to beautiful dried slices is consistency, so I always aim to Slice them about 1/4" to 1/8" thick. A sharp knife makes all the difference here! After slicing, I like to pat each piece really dry with a paper towel. This helps speed up the drying process and prevents them from getting mushy. Then, it's oven time! I preheat my oven to a low 200F. This low temperature is crucial for drying, not cooking, the fruit. I arrange my citrus slices on a baking rack (or parchment-lined baking sheet if I don't have enough racks) to allow for air circulation. Then, I Put them in the oven for around 6 hours. This isn't a 'set it and forget it' process, though! I make sure to keep an eye on them and flip them every 30 minutes or so. This ensures even drying and helps prevent sticking. You'll know they're done when they feel firm and leathery, not sticky or soft. If they're still a bit flexible, you can leave them in longer, checking frequently. Once cooled, the fun really begins – decorating! Dried citrus makes the most stunning ornaments. I usually poke a small hole near the top with a skewer or needle and thread some twine or ribbon through. They look absolutely gorgeous hanging on my Yule tree or even from branches around the house. For a beautiful dried lime garland or a mixed citrus garland, I string together alternating slices with wooden beads or cinnamon sticks. I've also used them to adorn homemade wreaths, adding a pop of natural color and a lovely scent. Beyond hanging decor, consider using your dried orange and lemon slices in potpourri bowls with cloves, star anise, and pinecones for a truly festive aroma. They also make charming additions to gift wrapping, tied with a simple ribbon. The beauty of these dried fruit decorations is their versatility and how long they last when stored properly in an airtight container. It's such a sustainable and heartwarming way to celebrate the season. Give it a try – you won't regret adding this touch of natural elegance to your holiday! A little tip I've picked up: some ovens run hotter than others, so it's always a good idea to check your fruit slices regularly, especially towards the end of the drying time. If they start to turn dark brown or burn, your oven might be too hot, or they're simply done. You want them to retain their vibrant, translucent color. Another thing I often do is add a few drops of essential oil – like orange or cinnamon – to the dried slices once they're completely cool, especially if I'm using them for potpourri. It gives them an extra fragrant boost! This simple craft brings so much joy and a beautiful, rustic aesthetic to my home every year.
