Lately, I've noticed a troubling trend on social media where Polynesian men openly critique Polynesian women's bodies, focusing on features like stretch marks or body shape in a way that's both hurtful and unnecessary. It’s disheartening because these comments often come from supposed members of the same community, which should instead uplift and celebrate unique cultural traits. From personal experience, having participated in community discussions and fitness groups like CrossFit, I’ve seen how these remarks can deeply affect women’s self-esteem and body image. The expectation that women should conform to certain beauty standards ignores our cultural heritage that values strength and resilience in diverse forms. I’ve also observed that some men criticize lighter matters such as differences in physical capabilities, like being outperformed in leg day deadlifts, which unfortunately adds to the tension rather than promoting healthy conversations about fitness and body acceptance. In confronting these issues, it’s crucial that Polynesian communities foster an environment where women are respected and supported—not just by others but by Polynesian men themselves. Open dialogue, education on cultural pride, and highlighting positive role models can help shift this narrative. When women and men appreciate and celebrate their unique bodies and abilities, it strengthens the entire community. As someone who values inclusive and respectful conversations, I encourage everyone to think twice before sharing or reacting to such comments. Supporting one another, especially in matters as personal as body image, will help us build a stronger, united Polynesian community that’s proud of its heritage and its people.
