Setting Vs. Finishing Spray

When it comes to makeup, the terms ‘setting spray’ and ‘finishing spray’ are often used interchangeably but they serve different purposes. Setting sprays are applied as a finishing touch to your makeup, working like a light mist to blend layers together, reducing a powdery finish and giving your skin a more natural appearance. Popular options include brands like Urban Decay and MAC, known for their hydrating properties that help keep your makeup intact. On the other hand, finishing sprays, which are also called fixing sprays, typically contain alcohol to create a protective barrier over your makeup. This thin film locks the makeup in place, shielding it from sweat, humidity, and oil. They are especially useful during events or in hot weather. While finishing sprays can be effective in preventing makeup from melting away, be aware that they can sometimes cause dryness due to their alcohol content. The ideal application technique is to use a setting spray first, to hydrate and blend, followed by a finishing spray for a long-lasting hold. For optimal performance, it’s recommended that both sprays be used in conjunction to achieve a beautiful and enduring makeup look.
