Week in the Life of a Theatre Student
As a Theatre Major, I lt has been fun yet EXHAUSTING lol working spotlight for The Scrooge.0 Christmas Production.
Here is a mini recap of how my nights have been! #theatre #college #christmas
Wow, what a week it's been! Being a theatre major really is a rollercoaster, and my recent Weekend working on The Scrooge.0 Christmas Production was no exception. People often see the glamour of the stage, but I wanted to share a deeper look into the today's realities and what it's truly like. It's not just about acting or singing; there's so much happening behind the scenes that shapes our entire performance arts course experience. For instance, this production was a massive learning curve. While I was on spotlight duty, I gained invaluable insights into the technical side of theatre – understanding lighting cues, timing, and how it all contributes to the storytelling. This kind of hands-on experience is crucial for any theatre student and honestly, it’s a form of theatre in education itself! You learn things in a practical setting that textbooks just can't teach. We discussed different approaches to stagecraft, and I got to see how decisions about set design, sound, and lighting come together to create a cohesive performance. It makes you appreciate every single detail when you're watching a show, knowing the massive effort that goes into even the smallest prop or lighting change. Speaking of details, one thing that always fascinates me is the costume department. During a production like Scrooge, where historical accuracy and character portrayal are key, the costume choices are incredibly specific. While I didn't work directly with costumes, I often overheard discussions about them. For example, imagining Scrooge's sleeping outfit for the ghostly visitations – it's not just a nightshirt! Designers think about the fabric, the cut, how it looks under stage lights, and how it helps convey his character's miserly nature even in his most vulnerable moments. Maybe it's a worn, patched up nightgown, or something historically accurate to the period, yet still reflecting his stinginess. These small but crucial decisions really build the world of the play. It's a fun thought exercise to consider how such a seemingly minor detail can contribute so much to a character's visual story and impact the audience's perception. Being a theatre student means embracing these challenges and learning opportunities. Every late night, every frantic cue, every moment of creative problem-solving adds to your skill set. It gives you a real recap of what a professional theatre career might entail. If you're considering a performance arts course, know that it's demanding, but the rewards are immense. You grow not just as an artist, but as a person, learning teamwork, resilience, and adaptability. It's a journey filled with highs and lows, but absolutely worth it for the passion you get to pursue. I'm already looking forward to my next project and what new lessons it will bring!
