Before & After: Front Door Project

My front door makeover was a game-changer for our home, especially after dealing with a badly flipped house. That's why I chose Behr 'Limousine Leather' in a semi-gloss finish – it’s a rich, deep black that instantly elevates the look. Before even thinking about paint, proper prep is KEY. For doors with peeling and chipping paint, you can't skip sanding. I made sure to meticulously sand down all the old, loose paint to create a smooth surface. This is critical for getting that beautiful, lasting finish. Don't rush this step; it truly makes all the difference in achieving a professional-looking result. While I went with a classic black, many of you might be considering other popular shades. 'Urbane Bronze' is a fantastic choice for a front door, offering a warm, sophisticated gray-brown that works wonderfully on many exterior styles. When choosing your exterior door color, think about your home's overall palette, your shutters, and even your landscaping. A semi-gloss finish is often ideal for exterior doors as it's durable and easy to clean. A fresh coat of paint is a fantastic start, but a true front door makeover often involves more. My project isn't entirely finished yet, and I'm tackling these next steps to complete the transformation: Weather Stripping: Replacing the weather stripping around the door is crucial for energy efficiency and comfort. Worn-out stripping lets drafts in and heated/cooled air out. It's a simple DIY fix that makes a big impact on your utility bills and overall comfort. Hardware Upgrade: I'm also planning to replace the handle and lock. New hardware can dramatically change the door's look, adding a modern touch or classic elegance. Consider finishes that complement your new paint color. Trim & Lighting: Stripping and repainting the door trim is next on my list. A crisp, clean trim frames your newly painted door beautifully. And don't forget the lighting! Changing out the outdoor light fixtures for something that fits the space's scale better can enhance both aesthetics and safety.
