How to clean white sneakers

I recently invested in my first pair of OnClouds as part of my journey to get in headier shape this year. My goal is to both look & feel better now that I’m on my 30s and my body is starting to change. I’m not a gym girlie. I don’t enjoy it. For me it is a necessity evil.

I used to be a professional dancer & I have knee, back & hip injuries so having a good gym shoe for my bodies needs is so important…but I’m also a girl so those shoes also need to look cute for my mental health. This also just removes one more hurdle for me in getting to the gym.

So these are my first pair of real sneakers. They were an investment. $160. I’ve had them for exactly 3 weeks and like a big dummy I wore them to work in the yard, getting them very very muddy.

Here’s how to fix that…

What you need:

—————————-

▪️Laundry toothbrush (a soft toothbrush or child’s toothbrush works just as well🔗)

▪️Messy Mouths Stin Remover (🔗)

▪️Laundry bleach

▪️dawn dish soap (5$3 original blue works best)

▪️warm water

▪️a bowel

How to:

—————————

1. In a bowl mix a few drops of dawn, some laundry bleach & warm water. Stir to mix & set aside

2. Spray your messy mouth stain remover directly into the stain and let it sit for a few min. Wet your toothbrush, and start to gently scrub. I find circular motions work best

3. Rinse with warm water

4. Dip your tooth brush in the dawn mixture & repeat that same process. Rinsing in between each

5. It usually takes 3-5 rounds alternating this to revive the stain.

6. As a last step I like to take one of the two mixtures (usually the dawn as it’s not as expensive as the messy mouth) and clean the rubber rims of the shoes and any rubber elements.

7. Rince the entire shoe off and bash off any extra water.

8. Let them dry for a few hours or u til completely dry in direct sunlight. I usually do this outside but it’s pollen season here right now and they would be caked in yellow gunk so a drink table & towel in the sunlight did the trick.

9. For really deep or set in stains I also will wash them in my washing machine with bleach & laundry detergent (it’s lid & annoying but it’s a really helpful final step) this time I did not need to do so since I washed these almost immediately!

👉🏼Bonus step: you can take out your white laces and let them soak in bleach for a few hours. Rinse and let them dry in the sun to wash & refresh their brightness

👉🏼Bonus Step: if the stains are set, toss your shoes in the washing machine with detergent & bleach and run them through a circle. You can also dry your n the dryer. This will be loud so try to get out of the house. If your shoes have any color (like these do) sun out the bleach for another layer of stain remover.

... Read moreAfter successfully bringing my muddy white OnClouds back to life, I've picked up a few extra insights and tips that I think are super helpful for keeping those pristine white sneakers looking their best long-term! It's all about making the cleaning process as effective and easy as possible, so your favorite kicks stay 'Good as new' for ages. First off, let's talk a bit more about the scrubbing process, especially with that trusty toothbrush. While the original method works wonders, I've found that focusing on specific areas makes a huge difference. When using your toothbrush with the soapy liquid, really get into the grooves of the rubber sole – that's where a lot of grime hides, and a toothbrush is perfect for it. For tougher spots, a slightly stiffer toothbrush (maybe an old one you've repurposed) can be more effective for the rubber parts, while keeping a soft one for the fabric. Remember to go with gentle circular motions on the fabric to avoid damaging the material, and don't be afraid to apply a little more pressure on the rubber soles to really lift the embedded dirt. It's truly satisfying to see the mud disappear with each scrub! Then there are the laces – often overlooked, but crucial for a completely refreshed look. Removing your laces before cleaning the shoes isn't just about getting to the tongue of the shoe; it's also about giving the laces themselves a proper wash. I like to soak them separately in a small bowl with a mix of warm water and a little laundry detergent or even a capful of bleach if they're pure white and very dirty. Just let them sit for a couple of hours, then rinse thoroughly. You'll be amazed at how much brighter they look! For a super easy option, you can even pop them into a mesh laundry bag and toss them in the washing machine with a regular load. Once your sneakers are scrubbed and rinsed, proper drying is key to preventing mildew and maintaining their shape. While 'drying in sunlight' is fantastic for its natural whitening and antibacterial properties, especially for stubborn stains, be mindful. If your shoes have any synthetic elements or colors beyond white, very intense, prolonged direct sunlight can sometimes cause yellowing or fading. I usually aim for indirect sunlight or a well-ventilated, sunny spot like near a window but not directly baking. If you're drying indoors, stuff your shoes with newspaper or paper towels – they absorb moisture and help maintain the shoe's shape. Just remember to change the paper every few hours until they're completely dry. Avoid using direct heat sources like hair dryers or radiators, as this can damage the glue and materials. And here's a bonus tip I recently started using, especially since wearing my OnClouds more often: odor control! Even the cleanest shoes can sometimes develop a bit of a smell, especially after sweaty workouts. This is where baking soda comes in handy. After a day of wear, simply sprinkle a tablespoon or two of baking soda inside each shoe. Let it sit overnight, and then just shake it out in the morning. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and works wonders to neutralize any lingering odors. For a continuous fresh scent, you can also tuck a dryer sheet inside each shoe when you're not wearing them. It makes a noticeable difference and keeps them feeling extra fresh every time you slip them on.
