Homemade butter:

Good quality heavy whipping cream and a kitchen mixer!

⭐️Overall rating boules: 7/10:

I make a double boule recipe for the sourdough and in one 1/2 I grated one lemons 🍋 skin and added that with blueberries 🫐 during lamination. Had zero oven spring but was delicious. The other boule was plain sourdough also with very little oven spring but delicious nonetheless.

⭐️Overall rating butter: 10/10:

Working on turning the butter 🧈 into 3 equal parts salted, unsalted and roasted garlic, onion, Italian seasoning, Himalayan salt with avocado oil.

... Read moreHomesteading on a small scale is a wonderfully rewarding experience, especially when it involves making your own sourdough bread and butter from scratch. From my personal journey, I found that even when the sourdough boules don’t rise as much as expected—resulting in low oven spring—the flavor can still be incredible. Incorporating lemon zest and blueberries into the dough added layers of fresh, tangy, and sweet notes that complemented the natural sourness beautifully. It’s important to note that sourdough baking is as much an art as a science; factors like starter vitality, hydration level, and baking temperature can greatly affect the rise and texture. When it comes to homemade butter, using good quality heavy whipping cream and a reliable mixer makes all the difference. Separating the butter into three varieties—salted, unsalted, and a savory mix with roasted garlic, onion, Italian seasoning, Himalayan salt, and avocado oil—turned out to be an amazing way to enhance everyday meals. The infused butters add complexity and richness to dishes, from fresh bread to roasted vegetables or grilled meats. Homemade butter not only tastes fresher but allows you to control ingredients, avoiding preservatives found in store-bought versions. If you’re new to homesteading, starting with basics like sourdough and butter is a gentle, satisfying entry point. Patience and experimentation will lead to improvements, and sharing your creations with family or friends can make the process even more fulfilling. This kind of hands-on cooking reconnects you with traditional food preparation and the joy of crafting something nourishing from simple ingredients and lots of love.
