Margaret is back in layand no longer broody!

It's such a relief when your best layer, like my California Tan hen Margaret, finally snaps out of being broody! For those of you who might be new to backyard chickens or dealing with a broody hen for the first time, it can be a real headache, especially when you know she's capable of laying those incredible, extra-large chicken eggs. I’m sharing my personal journey and tips on dealing with broodiness and maximizing California Tan egg production. California Tan chickens are truly remarkable layers. They are known for their consistent production of big, brown eggs, often rivaling or even exceeding the size of eggs from other popular breeds. I remember when Margaret first started laying; her California Tan chicken eggs were notably larger than any other hens' eggs, and the quality was always superb. This is why it’s so frustrating when they go broody – it halts that fantastic egg supply! Dealing with a broody hen is all about breaking that maternal instinct. My first step is always to gently remove her from the nesting box. I make sure to do this several times a day. If she just goes right back, I’ve found success by temporarily blocking off the nesting box she prefers, or even moving her to a separate, wire-bottomed "broody breaker" cage for a day or two. The wire bottom helps cool her underside, discouraging her desire to sit and hatch. It sounds a bit harsh, but it's effective and keeps them from wasting away or becoming unhealthy from not eating and drinking properly. For Margaret, who is a persistent white chicken with a vibrant red comb, simply removing her from the comfy nesting box and encouraging her to socialize with the flock usually does the trick after a few attempts. To ensure consistent California Tan chicken egg production, beyond managing broodiness, a good diet is key. I feed my flock a high-quality layer feed, especially when they are actively laying. Fresh, clean water is absolutely essential, and I make sure they always have access to grit and oyster shell for strong eggshells. Adequate nesting boxes are also important; ideally, one nesting box for every 4-5 hens. I've even experimented with different types of nesting materials to see what they prefer. For those interested in raising California Tan chicks, they grow into robust and friendly birds. They are generally quite active and healthy, making them a joy to raise from a young age. Watching them mature into strong layers of those beautiful California Tan eggs is incredibly rewarding. It’s been a learning curve with Margaret, but seeing her back to her usual self, strutting around the coop and laying those magnificent eggs, makes all the effort worthwhile.
