1 year old pork that’s been sitting on a shelf.

If you don’t can, you should. It’s so fun and you always have your favorite meals / sides / foods on hand, especially with rebel canning like I do! It’s even better when you’re stuck in the house bc of horrible weather and need to go food shopping but can’t… this actually helped my family save money, maybe not right off the rip but in the long run it did. This wasn’t one of my rebel canning jars though.

Tonight I heated up country style pork ribs in a spicy honey mustard sauce, with a side of rice - I added the sauce from the jar to it with a bit of corn starch bc I was originally going to have the sauce over the pork but then I was like ehh I need a side and saw the rice and was thinking I can’t have boring plain rice so I added the sauce with the corn starch 🤷🏼‍♀️ and a sourdough biscuit with honey bacon butter! I made this October of last year and I can’t remember if I used prepared mustard for the sauce or mustard powder, either way I didn’t taste mustard at all, I must have not added enough but that’s ok bc it was really really good! 🤷🏼‍♀️ #canning #trending #food #lemon8challenge #viral

Canning not only preserves food but also offers a way to save money and reduce food waste. For meats like pork, proper canning techniques are essential for maintaining safety and quality. When it comes to canned meat, the USDA recommends using a pressure canner, as it can reach the temperatures necessary to safely preserve meats. It's crucial to label your jars with the date they were sealed, so you can keep track of their freshness, with a recommended shelf life of around 1-2 years for canned meat items if stored properly. Cooking with previously canned pork can be a delightful experience. For instance, sautéing it with flavorful sauces or serving it alongside seasoned rice can create satisfying meals. Ingredients such as honey mustard can elevate your dishes, providing a sweet and savory balance. Don't forget about side dishes, as they can complete your meal and make it special. Consider adding some homemade biscuits slathered in honey butter to enhance your dining experience. In addition to checking for proper sealing and any signs of spoilage, always taste a small portion before serving, particularly if the food has been stored for a long time. Remember that the flavor can vary, and modifying your recipe allows for creativity in the kitchen. Explore different spices or add fresh produce to revive your meals, making the best use of your pantry staples.
