Big mama 🌸
The babies I hatched on Easter are sllllowly being integrated into my pet and layer flock. They’re only two months old so they’re still a little on the young side to be with the big girls full-time even my little cockerel, Judge. I couldn’t believe how Mama took to them so well.
Integrating baby chicks into an existing flock can be a delicate process. The experience of a mama hen, who fosters a loving environment for her young, brings light to the nurturing instincts present in poultry. As chicks hatch, they rely on their mothers for warmth and protection. A smooth introduction can be facilitated by ensuring that the chicks are of similar size to avoid bullying. It’s essential to prepare a separate adjusting area for newcomers initially, which allows safe interactions with the established flock. Gradually increasing the time the chicks spend with the adults fosters acceptance. Notably, it is vital to provide ample space in your coop or run. Environmental enrichment, such as fresh green grass or pecking blocks, keeps both layers and new arrivals entertained, reducing stress. Not only does this encourage acceptance, but it also supports healthy behavior during the transitional phase. Ultimately, patience and observation are key in ensuring joyful coexistence amongst your feathered family.
