Ducks love chicken

You know, after that incredible day my ducks went absolutely wild for chicken carcasses and skin, I couldn't stop thinking about it! Who knew ducks would have loved chicken carcasses / skin so much they'd fight over it? It was a real eye-opener because I always thought of ducks as mostly vegetarian or insect-eaters. That experience really got me researching what else is safe and healthy for my feathered friends to eat. It turns out, ducks are omnivores, and a little bit of meat can actually be beneficial for them, especially for protein. Cooked chicken, including small pieces of meat and skin, can be a great protein boost. However, it's super important to make sure any chicken you offer is cooked thoroughly and any bones are removed or soft enough not to cause choking hazards. Large, brittle chicken bones from cooked chicken can splinter and be very dangerous for ducks. My ducks were particularly fond of the softer bits and skin, which seems to be less risky. I've read that some people even feed their ducks finely ground, cooked chicken bones as a calcium supplement, but I'm a bit cautious about that myself and prefer other calcium sources. Raw chicken, while potentially more 'natural' in a wild setting, carries a risk of salmonella and other bacteria, so I always stick to cooked leftovers for safety. Beyond the occasional treat like chicken, a balanced diet is crucial. This is where commercial feeds come in. I often get asked about things like Dumor scratch grains. While my ducks definitely enjoy scratch grains – they love pecking at them and it provides a lot of entertainment – it's important to remember that scratch grains are primarily a treat, like popcorn for humans. They're mostly made of cracked corn, oats, and barley, providing carbohydrates and energy, but they lack the complete protein, vitamins, and minerals that ducks need to thrive. If you feed too many scratch grains, your ducks can become overweight and miss out on essential nutrients. For their daily diet, I make sure my ducks get a high-quality waterfowl or duck pellet. These are formulated to provide all the necessary nutrients for growth, egg production, and overall health. I use scratch grains sparingly, maybe a handful as a treat or to encourage them to forage in a specific area. It's a fun way to interact with them, but not a substitute for their main feed. I've also found that adding a variety of fresh greens, like chopped lettuce, spinach, or even weeds from the garden (make sure they're non-toxic!), really boosts their health and happiness. And of course, fresh, clean water available at all times for drinking and dabbling is non-negotiable. So, while my ducks’ love for chicken carcasses was a surprising and funny moment, it also taught me a lot about their dietary needs and how to provide a well-rounded meal plan for them. It’s all about balance and observing what makes your feathered family thrive!
