What Do I Wear To Clinicals? PA Student Edition🩺

2025/6/17 Edited to

... Read moreStepping into clinicals as a Physician Assistant (PA) student is such an exciting, yet often nerve-wracking, time! One of the first things many of us wonder is, 'What exactly am I supposed to wear?' Trust me, I've been there, staring at my closet, trying to decipher the unwritten rules of clinical attire. It's not just about looking professional; it's about comfort, safety, and making a great impression. Let's talk about the big one: Scrubs. You'll definitely wear them, but not necessarily every day or in every rotation. Scrubs are your go-to for settings like the emergency department, operating room, labor and delivery, or any specialty where things can get messy. When choosing scrubs, prioritize comfort and functionality. Look for breathable fabrics that allow for movement. I always recommend having a few sets in neutral colors or those specified by your program or clinical site. Make sure they fit well – not too baggy that they become a hazard, but not so tight they restrict you. Remember, a clean, well-fitting set of scrubs immediately conveys professionalism and readiness. For many other rotations, especially in outpatient clinics, family medicine, or when you're just shadowing a PA, business casual is often the expectation. This means slacks or sensible skirts (knee-length or longer), blouses, button-down shirts, and professional sweaters or cardigans. Avoid anything too revealing, ripped, or overly casual like jeans or t-shirts. My personal rule of thumb is: if I wouldn't wear it to a job interview, it's probably not appropriate for a professional clinical setting. Planning your 'OOTD' (Outfit Of The Day) for these rotations in advance can save you a lot of morning stress! And let's not forget about footwear – arguably the most important part of your clinical 'OOTD'! You'll be on your feet for hours, so comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good support are non-negotiable. Think sneakers designed for healthcare professionals, nursing shoes, or comfortable loafers. Avoid sandals, open-toed shoes, or high heels. A good pair of non-slip shoes could genuinely be your best investment. Beyond the main clothing, consider your accessories and grooming. Always wear your student ID badge where it's visible. Keep your hair neatly tied back if it's long, and maintain minimal, professional makeup and jewelry. A watch (with a second hand!), a small notebook, and a few pens are essential tools that should always be in your pockets. Ultimately, your clinical attire as a PA student is about showing respect for your patients, your preceptors, and your profession. It's about being comfortable enough to focus on learning, and practical enough to handle the demands of the day. By understanding the general guidelines for scrubs versus business casual, and prioritizing comfort and cleanliness, you'll be well-prepared to tackle any clinical rotation with confidence!
