... Read moreFrom my experience, a client who cycles through multiple attorneys—sometimes as many as nine—often signals deeper issues in the case itself or the client's approach. It's not uncommon for some clients to have unrealistic expectations about their cases, which leads to frequent dismissals of legal advice and eventually, a turnover of lawyers. This pattern can also reflect how complex or problematic the case might be, possibly hinting at weaknesses in the evidence or credibility challenges. Having worked alongside trial lawyers, I've noticed that when a client has a trail of attorneys behind them, lawyers become more cautious, knowing the client's history of dissatisfaction or disputes. It affects negotiations, trial strategies, and even the willingness of attorneys to take on the case pro bono or at reduced rates, as trust and expectations play big roles. It’s also important to consider that sometimes, switching lawyers is driven by miscommunications or mismatched personalities, not always the case’s merit. However, a consistent pattern of lawyer changes often ends up costing time and resources, ultimately affecting the case’s outcome. For clients, it's critical to set realistic goals and maintain open communication with their legal counsel. For attorneys, recognizing these red flags early can help in managing the case better or deciding whether to take it on. In any event, the trail of former attorneys is something that both sides should analyze deeply before proceeding too far in litigation or settlement talks.
